Whatever they are, they certainly raise an eyebrow or two when a carrier group sidles up alongside one country or another....

Svartalf wrote:Not really... In the 100 Year War, Philippe de Valois had initial success at Crécy because (or so the English claim) he used a newfangled weapon called the bombard, whose noise and smoke spooked the English horse... Then again, later in the war the English won total victories through use of older, but more efficient and reliable tactics and equipment (the longbow)Hermit wrote:The start of each new war is fought with the technologies and tactics of the previous one.
Similarly, in 1870, the Prussian fielded a rifle, the Dreyse, which was fairly untested in war, and the French were confident that they'd win easily thanks to their newer and better Chassepot rifle.
Seems like Gawdzilla has already pointed that aspect of warfare out.Gawdzilla wrote:Barring interim advances, yeah.Hermit wrote:The start of each new war is fought with the technologies and tactics of the previous one.
A key feature of the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars was frontal attack by the infantry. Battles were decided by the success of those. Then the use of machine guns became an important and ubiquitous weapon. Yet infantry kept being sent toward the enemy only to be mown down by them throughout WWI. Despite the huge cost in lives on all sides that war was stalemated for years until the German arms manufacturers simply ran out of puff.

Aren't you going to need a really big aircraft to carry a submarine?

Lovely trivia about machine guns in WWI. The Germans could put one bullet in every linear foot of line, every second. Do the math.

The current "insertion" subs can be carried by C-130s. The Hercules can land on a carrier if necessary.MrJonno wrote:Aren't you going to need a really big aircraft to carry a submarine?
So, no.

They didn't work at the time though.

The first launch of a missile from a submarine was a V-1 from the deck of a surfaced USN diesel sub. Long way from the current cruise missiles.klr wrote:Thumpalumpacus wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-400_class_submarinemistermack wrote:My prediction is aircraft-carrying subs.
