I know, it's stunning.
But nothing beats "shit of the artist" for me, even if it didn't make quite so much.
I have a heap of it up my ass.

Banksy really showed up the stupidity of the art buying world in Exit Through the Gift Shop. That's if we are to believe the rumours Banksy set it up and not take the film at face-value.

Highly recommended

It's what you want it to be.

And isn't it wonderful how the smell seems to follow you around the room?

When I say modern art is crap, this is what I mean. Artificial inflation of value and a completely bizarre idea of quality.

I think it's a rather nice-looking painting, and if it has been done with good technique (i.e. is not likely to start crumbling down from the canvas any time soon) it could be worth maybe several hundreds or a few thousand euros, to me. Maybe in the low tens of thousands, as it appears to be pretty big.

But almost 70 MILLION euros? Get your head examined!
"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

Looks like degenerate art purchasers? What solution is there for such people? :smoke:

As I just mentioned on RatSkep. If you recognise this and how it works you can do a Rothko. You can make your kitchen or bathroom look like a Rothko.

Also, the last major film by Orson Welles, F for Fake. You can watch it in full on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2EZ9rFBRlI

And as I mentioned on RatSkep, until you see it in real life, your opinion is worthless. We should take it as seriously as someone who says "that food tastes terrible, the chef is a fake, and it's not worth the price" - after only seeing a picture of the food on the Internet.

As a fan of much of modern art I agree. However the other side of the coin is some of them look pretty crappy up-close too!

Ever see the Caravaggio in Dublin? I could tell it was good before I saw it in person. Even though it is marginally better in person. Your analogy doesn't hold because what you see is not what you get with food. With art what you see in print is more or less what you get.

Of course. If you can't baffle them with wankery, bamboozle them with mystification. "There is something real yet ethereal in the original that can never be transmitted through a reproduction. Just come and have a look. You'll feel it immediately and be convinced it's true."

Newsflash: Utter crap. Every single letter of it. I've spent many hours at several art galleries in Australia and Europe. I've seen paintings "in real life". I've seen works by Rothko, that are particularly renowned for only being truly appreciated if seen "in real life". The myth is created by wankers and propagated by those who profit from it the most - art dealers, critics, publishers. My opinion is not worthless. It is based on experience and therefore it is worth as much as yours.

And your food analogy sucks big-time.

Nope. Different art techniques, different artworks lose different amounts in translation to reproduction.

I've argued in greater detail over at RatSkep. I'm not going to repeat myself here.
