Drones to Circle Washington, DC
Drones are coming to US soil ... http://wtop.com/120/2846813/Live-Blog-A ... rlie-Deane
I suppose it's inevitable. They are a useful tool for valid reasons. They will, of course, also involve overreaching, but with the surveillance technology and the ability to even include devices that can scan for nuclear and other materials from the sky, we pretty much would be stupid not to have them up there.

They wouldn't be necessary if the US had invested in on the ground surveilance cameras like the UK.Clinton Huxley wrote:I always feel like somebody's watching me and I got no privacy.....

So which of those articles talked about anything even closely related to detecting an amount of NM likely to ever exist within a major US city (even a nuclear bomb) in a rapid scan from several hundred meters?

They all do to some extent, except the first one which talks about underwater drones. The technology to detect nuclear materials at a distance is under serious development, and certainly will be put in drones. Like I said, in development.MiM wrote:So which of those articles talked about anything even closely related to detecting an amount of NM likely to ever exist within a major US city (even a nuclear bomb) in a rapid scan from several hundred meters?

I've never understood the fascination many people seem to have with drones. They're not autonomous (at least not yet, and eventually they'll still be guided by programming), they're just piloted remotely. Is there some big ethical difference between a remotely-piloted aircraft and one where the pilot is onboard? Aircraft have been used for surveillance for over a hundred years (and hot air balloons long before that). Discussions about drones in any context seem really trivial to me, like a discussion in the 1950s about how helicopters or jets are increasingly used in place of propeller aircraft. So what?

I think you have more surveillance in the UK than we do here in the US Crumple.Crumple wrote:Frog boiled in water. Welcome to a surveilance state.

You're confusing drones with zombies. Big difference.Bella Fortuna wrote:That's been happening for decades; they're called "elected officials."Drones to Circle Washington, DC
Unfortunately, we're not allowed to kill zombies except in the movies.

Re: Drones to Circle Washington, DC
Drones are certainly useful, for scanning areas where you hesitate to send pilots, like above the Chernobyl or Fukushima reactors at the time of the accident.Ian wrote:I've never understood the fascination many people seem to have with drones. Ian, when the Missouri and New Jersey were in Long Beach Naval Shipyard at the same time KTLA interviewed people who were lined up on a bridge to view them. The reporter asked one person what she thought of two such powerful ships being in LA at the same time?Ian wrote:I've never understood the fascination many people seem to have with drones.
