Shit, that's big...
They've had some nasty ones on that coast before. Whether there's a serious tsunami depends on whether the fault movement was up and down, or a side-slip...

That big on the Richter scale couldn't help but slosh some sea around, but horizontal is a fuck of a lot better than vertical...Elessarina wrote:Howvever sea levels indicate a Tsunami and India is on alert

On the ABC site they are saying 33 km depth. That's probably a good thing - less chance of significant movement at the seafloor.

Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

Not necessarily. That 33 km is the depth of the earthquake, not the depth of the ocean at that point.JimC wrote:And a bigger volume of seawater to move?Faithfree wrote:On the ABC site they are saying 33 km depth. That's probably a good thing - less chance of significant movement at the seafloor.

Actually, I would imagine that it would be better in shallower water, because that would mean more rock above the quake to cushion the effect. That could be offset by other effects though.

You get the exactly the same horsepower from four and a half inches, at double the revs. ( so I'm told )Bella Fortuna wrote:That's what he said...JimC wrote:Should be at least 9 inches...Elessarina wrote:Tsunami is 6.7 inches / 17 cm
