Shit, that's big...

They've had some nasty ones on that coast before. Whether there's a serious tsunami depends on whether the fault movement was up and down, or a side-slip...

I've just seen that on the news.. apparently less chance of a Tsunami because the earth mpoved horizontally rather than vertically :freak:

On the ABC site they are saying 33 km depth. That's probably a good thing - less chance of significant movement at the seafloor.

Not necessarily. That 33 km is the depth of the earthquake, not the depth of the ocean at that point.

Actually, I would imagine that it would be better in shallower water, because that would mean more rock above the quake to cushion the effect. That could be offset by other effects though.
