Photo ID required!
Justice Department opposes photo ID requirement for voting, because Justice Department thinks it is too difficult for Mexicans to acquire them --- http://news.yahoo.com/justice-dept-oppo ... 38429.html

Re: Photo ID required!
Please remind me... the only kind of widely used Picture ID you folks have is driving licences. Do you systematically get a fresh one when you move to a different state?
and how difficult is it for a citizen who can drive to get a licence in a new state of residence?
Also remind me what kind of hoops you have to go through to get meds like rohypnol or opioids?

Re: Photo ID required!
If you move to a new state then to have a drivers license, you have to get a new one in that new state. All states also offer non-driving related photo identification. The reason the drivers license is widely used is because most people drive. People who don't drive can get a state or county ID.Svartalf wrote:Please remind me... the only kind of widely used Picture ID you folks have is driving licences. Simple. I have experience in 3 states. You trot on down to the division of motor vehicle department, fill out a form, take an eye exam, and they issue it to you. And, if you can't be issued a drivers license or if you don't want one, you can have a state ID that is not for driving.Svartalf wrote: and how difficult is it for a citizen who can drive to get a licence in a new state of residence?
I don't know. But apparently to get Claritan allergy medication, you have to present a photo ID under federal law.Svartalf wrote:

Actually, only Claritin D, the one with ephedrin in it. I bet that standard claritin is a normal prescription med, or maybe OTC.

Yes, but that is the point. Apparently, it's o.k. to discriminate against Mexicans relative to access to medicines, including but not limited to Claritin D. There has been no suggestion from the Department of Justice that it is unfair that Mexicans be disproportionately deprived of medications.Svartalf wrote:Actually, only Claritin D, the one with ephedrin in it. So, they're saying that Mexicans are more likely to be making Meth out of Claritin? Must be...since their rule disproportionately excludes Mexicans from access to the medication...disparate impact.Feck wrote:that's just cos of MethSvartalf wrote:Actually, only Claritin D, the one with ephedrin in it. What I don't get is why Hispanic American citizens should be at such a disadvantage compared to other Americans when it comes to getting picture ID.
Let's remember, the OP is first about a voting law, and non citizens don't vote anyway.

Re: Photo ID required!
This is clearly an issue of 'illegal' immigrant Mexicans...otherwise they wouldn't have a problem getting an ID.
Regarding driving - to drive legally anywhere in the US you must have a driver's license from your legal state of residence. I could live in Florida for years and not need a Florida license to drive there, if my state of legal residence was California and that's where my license was from.

Aside from booze and smokes, you can't get welfare with out ID.
So ID laws must discriminate against Mitt Romney's south of the border relatives and not much else.

I think they are suggesting that Mexican citizens in Texas are at a disadvantage relative to drivers licenses. I have seen no evidence that they are. Basically, they want to make it easy for non-eligible voters to vote by making it difficult to verify who is on the voter rolls.
It's the Department of Justice who is alleging the Texas law is discriminatory against Mexicans. At the same time, the federal government has a law requiring picture ID to be produced to get certain medicines. Seems incongruous.

Re: Photo ID required!
I would think the vast, vast majority of legal Hispanics in the US would have picture ID so that they don't accidentally get deported. Police also tend not to release people that they arrest until the can positively identify them.
But it's just a backdoor attempt to steal the election by flooding the voter roles with Democrat leaning illegals.

Re: Photo ID required!
Considering an illegal immigrant is not legally permitted to vote, it seems as if that would make the ID requirement all the more reasonable. It seems hardly an injustice to prevent people who are not legally entitled to vote from voting. Unless, well, unless of course one's goal is to allow them to vote - then opposing ID requirements would be an obvious position to take...maiforpeace wrote:This is clearly an issue of 'illegal' immigrant Mexicans...otherwise they wouldn't have a problem getting an ID.
If you live in Florida, Florida law requires that you change your drivers license to Florida, if you drive. You can't legally maintain a legal residence in a state in which you do not actually reside. It can be done as a practical matter, by using an address you don't live at and saying that you do. But, the technical, legal requirement is that you get a drivers license in the state in which you actually reside.maiforpeace wrote:
