Be that as it may, the principle still stands -- chicks dig guys who are good at stuff. It hardly matters what. It's the musician theory writ large. You know - like how chicks dig rock stars. They play music, they sing -- they have some sort of "talent" or ability. They can be ugly as sin, and total assholes to boot, and yet chicks flock to them. Take that truism and apply it to anything and you will see it work. As soon as a guy gets good or accomplished at something, he will be in higher demand.

Clearly not, but I've been around enough engineering schools and enough chick engineers to know that, well, how should I put this.... their 10 is everyone else's 7....

Coito, as I said before: so very and clearly non-geek - that's the impression I get from your posts (and of course that may be deliberate jesting on your part). The impression gets created, because Real Geeks are attracted to geekyness/eggheads and the egghead kind of passion for excellence more than to anything else, especially when seeking longer term relationships - in my experience at least.

For popular culture examples: in TNG Picard is sexier than Riker, Data is sexier still than Picard (weirdly enough) and Guinan is the sexiest of all the female cast (OK, that one short scene with Yar and Data did have quite a lot of special something...). And Kira of DS9 is not exactly a supermodel, yet

Guinan was the sexiest of all the female cast? I don't grok that at all. She wasn't anywhere close to sexier than Tasha Yar, Dr. Crusher, or Deanna Troix, among others. And, I think I speak for most men when I say that. But, it's not surprising we would see things differently in this regard. You're a woman. I'm a man. We tend to reflect our culture in that regard. So, I wouldn't even try to argue with you about the fact that looks are not all that important to you. In fact, that's precisely what I've been saying, isn't it? I mean, you referred to the attractiveness of the "egghead kind of passion for excellence."

That is PRECISELY what I said. And, your acknowledgement of it lends support to my argument. You're a woman, and you find a person who may not be physically attractive still very sexy because of their intelligence and passion for excellence. Yes! Where you go wrong is equating your experience to the male experience -- you won't get this honest report from the guys you talk to in a mixed "coed" group. They'll tell you what they know you want to hear - that intelligence is where it is at and they'll take a hairy-toed geek over a model any day of the week -- but, put them in a room like that show "The Bachelor" and give them a choice, and they'll take the physically hot chick 9 times out of 10. And, any young guys following along this conversation - heed well the words of Ronja -- it doesn't matter what you look like much, what's more important is that you have something interesting that you're passionate and good at.
