Several systems (NSSMS, RAM, CIWS, NULKA, SRBOC), but detection of anything that appears threatening would mean an incoming missile, not another ship.

This was probably just a case of tactics; a carrier group already had plans to transit the Strait (this sort of thing requires meetings, promulgated plans of action to the ships involved, etc.) and didn't want to bother adjusting the plan to other ships who were then requesting a PR stunt. I don't think this was something handled at any level higher than NAVCENT (the Naval Component of the US' Central Command), certainly not by any bigshots in DC.

The USN doesn't have any real disdain for the Royal Navy, btw; having deployed with some of those guys during a NATO cruise in 2001, I must say I was quite impressed by the professionalism of the British. Ditto the Germans. Slightly less so from the French and Spanish. The Italians and Turks were rather annoying. And the Dutch ship was only a warship in that it looked like one; having met some of their "sailors", I wouldn't want to go into battle with any of them. However, they're fun to get to know during port visits, and their women were cute.
