Re: Iran Navy Harasses US Warships
I suspect that the US warships have defensive systems that go off almost automagically upon detection of anything that even appears threatening. Coordinating that with non-US participants probably takes some doing to avoid killing them with friendly fire.

So, you don't know any British general officers that were anti-American?Clinton Huxley wrote:Admiral King! That's the name I was trying to remember. One day, the US will find itself without allies at all. And that will probably still be fine for it. Probably.

As long as the RN ship avoids holding a wedding party on the deck, it should be safe....amused wrote:I suspect that the US warships have defensive systems that go off almost automagically upon detection of anything that even appears threatening. No, it's a matter of pointing out that people are people. King had his prejudices, so did some British officers. Not exclusive to the US.Clinton Huxley wrote:That's a CES style argument!Gawdzilla wrote:So, you don't know any British general officers that were anti-American?Clinton Huxley wrote:Admiral King! Several systems (NSSMS, RAM, CIWS, NULKA, SRBOC), but detection of anything that appears threatening would mean an incoming missile, not another ship.amused wrote:I suspect that the US warships have defensive systems that go off almost automagically upon detection of anything that even appears threatening. This was probably just a case of tactics; a carrier group already had plans to transit the Strait (this sort of thing requires meetings, promulgated plans of action to the ships involved, etc.) and didn't want to bother adjusting the plan to other ships who were then requesting a PR stunt. I don't think this was something handled at any level higher than NAVCENT (the Naval Component of the US' Central Command), certainly not by any bigshots in DC.
The USN doesn't have any real disdain for the Royal Navy, btw; having deployed with some of those guys during a NATO cruise in 2001, I must say I was quite impressed by the professionalism of the British. Ditto the Germans. Slightly less so from the French and Spanish. The Italians and Turks were rather annoying. And the Dutch ship was only a warship in that it looked like one; having met some of their "sailors", I wouldn't want to go into battle with any of them. However, they're fun to get to know during port visits, and their women were cute.

Okay, what evidence do you have for that position, please?Clinton Huxley wrote:Aye, doesn't mean it ain't the case in this case.
