The food at the vcp's had attracted them (there were several) and some of the guys were stupid enough to feed them (the things folk do when they're bored). As a result they had become fairly tame tolerant of humans.

I was sitting on a breakwater here (10°26'18.45" N 75°31'52.37" W) one time waiting for the casino across the street to open (sundown, for some reason). I was watching crabs scuttle around and smoking a "cigarette". As it got dark I noticed that the crabs had glowing red eyes. I flicked my Bic and saw that there were several hundred rats all around me. I am stupid, so I beat feet out of there. "Your beach!"
