Port Authority toll collectors not only grab your money at New York-New Jersey crossings, they’re now pulling down stunning six-figure salaries funded by the levies you pay at bridges and tunnels.
Twenty-four toll collectors at the bi-state agency have made more than $80,000 so far in 2011 — payments pumped up by massive overtime. Seven of those workers took in $90,000 or more.
The OWS should occupy the toll plazas!

Every toll road in Victoria certainly, and probably the rest of Oz, works by radio transponder...Coito ergo sum wrote:I'm asking why there is still such a profession...
Toll-by-plate is working all over the place. At most, there should be one toll-taker, or a very few, that are there to solve problems.
$100,000 a year, means 100,000 cars at a dollar each have to pass just to pay ONE GUY'S salary. Add to that all the other employees, and the maintenance and construction of toll buildings, etc., and all other operating costs, and you might as well tear the fuckers down and let people drive through for free.
If the US needs some help implementing modern technology, I'm sure we could find somebody to assist...
For a price...

Re: Toll collectors making six-figure salaries...
Having a toll road where toll is just $1 ~ £0.60 does sound very silly, tolls have to be high enough to be worth collecting, typically they can be 10 times that for some tolls in the UK

Yes, but the article stated "so far," at a point in time during the year when there was enough time left in the year where the annual pay would exceed $100,000....eXcommunicate wrote:The quoted sums are 5 figures.Coito ergo sum wrote:Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/high ... z1gWcpLSFyThey take your cash . . . in so many ways.

But I look at it this way, everyone shops, and almost all goods travel along highways. Even if you don't own a car, you still benefit from them.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

I have the transponder in my car, and it is turning me into a "free choice capitalist"

Massive amounts of overtime. We pay people for that shit.
Re: Toll collectors making six-figure salaries...
Still think having a toll of $1 per car simply is too low to bother collecting

If those figures is right is 36 million which taking into account costs may or may not be worthwhile.Gawdzilla wrote:365 X $100,000.00 = um, uh, many dollars.MrJonno wrote:Still think having a toll of $1 per car simply is too low to bother collecting
We certainly wouldnt bother with such low tolls in the UK

If new roads can't be built without tolls, then I have no objection to the user pays principle in such cases, but electronic collection is so much more sensible than people in booths...
