Most jobs do not require a Degree level Education

Post by Jesus_of_Nazareth » Wed Nov 30, 2011 10:58 am

FACT.

You can tell which ones by the simple fact that they will also (later) require Proffesional Exams.

The most useful thing that a Degree does is provide someone with an additional couple of years of maturity. £30k+ is a lot to pay for that.

Unfortunately the UK seems to have got sucked into Qualification Inflation - by many companies requiring a degree............

What Employers need (for Jobs that also require a bit of thinking) is someone who can learn, and is willing to put some effort in (and a degree is no guarantee of that). - you only really find out what the person is actually capable of 6 months in (Interviews are largely a waste of time - it's always a 50 / 50 punt).......but need to give HR something to do :fp:

I will give someone a job if I thought you will make me money - I'd be an idiot not to.

Well, that's settled then, most of the 3rd level sector can be abolished.

And I would be out of a job. :nervous:

I've seen a lot of people who thought that fail at systems engineering.

Spectacularly. Think "Hindenburg of the Interwebz." Think ten million dollar website-n-ad-campaign-corkscrew-into-mountainside-in-flames. Think entire-IT-department-deep-sixed.

The biggest debacle I've ever seen started when my phone rang and one of my favorite field engineers said one word when I picked it up:

Service jobs often don't. We need farmers and construction, but cheaper manufacure will move those jobs to Asia. Unless you speak the language, you cant follow the job.

I can already see PhD chemists here leading a team that is in China. And they will have Chinese degrees.

The Republican Teagagger Party outsourced their fundraising to India.

I am not kidding. I have gotten five phone calls fundraising for the local 'gagger in the past month. "Ahhh, hi, I am being Mark, is the Mr. Schneibsteress a-a-a-available pleasing?"

The people who sell the products don't pay the people who make the products enough to buy the products.

I wish I could see a flaw in that system.

I'm pretty sure a) they don't expect to live that long and b) they wouldn't understand what I'm saying. They're programmed only to recognize money words.

It's not that having a degree makes you brilliant its that so many people who don't have one are just so bad.

Doing a degree basically means you have a fair grasp of a written and oral language ( ie you can speak in more than a grunt without swearing), you can sit down for 2-3 hours in an exam and write something without chatting to your mates (what you write is irrelevant). You have the ability to turn up at a location on time (you may even look up how to get there in advance).

Other skills the ability to concentrate enough to read a book, the ability to concentrate on a particular task. You also may know how to queue, how to change how you speak depending on who the target of conversation is. Even better you may be able to disagree with someone without punching them!

I rather like the idea of my sons being taught by people with science and maths degrees...

Silly, naive me...

The other days I heard "History is science without all the math." It actually made sense to me, because you can't start with a conclusion and look for evidence, you have to start with the evidence and draw a conclusion. (Well, "can't" isn't right, people do it all the time, but that's how it should work.)

Yeah, that degree in finger painting really helps when teaching other subjects.

IMO don't need to have a degree to teach to O Level / GCSE (16? - it's a while ago :D )......just need to be a good teacher and capable of learning the syllabus for an O Level / GCSE (which effectively means capable of taking an O level in the subject). FFS only teaching child level stuff - not training Astronauts :fp:

FWIW (not a lot  ) I would allow folk to be teachers if:-

- they are over 30 (maturity and being p#ssed off at current career path :banghead: - is a good thing  )
- have an O and maybe an A level in the subject
- pass the teacher training course (I think 1 year) - and that involves live lessons.

Teaching Unions would bitch, but f#ck 'em :hehe:
