I guess you just have to hope editors have some integrity and some idea that with freedom come obligations, Some hope when Murdock owns a newspaper or two .
Well, lets see...people have a right to know if the candidate will vote FOR gays as well as against, and I thought being gay was not something to be ashamed of, so why would a candidate conceal that fact, or wish to, unless it has some effect on how he will represent his constituents.
Moreover, since he is a representative, the people who are going to give him power and authority have every right to look at ANY aspect of his life they choose, and judge whether or not he will represent THEIR interests properly while in office. And to be quite frank, if they don't think a gay person can do so, they have every right to inquire of his sexual orientation, just as they have a right to inquire of the sexual orientation and practices of any candidate, prior to voting for him/her.
If his constituency is comprised of deeply religious people with strict sexual mores, and he's a libertine sadomasochist, then it's doubtful that he can properly represent them, just as a heavily gay constituency in San Francisco would not want to be represented by James Dobson or Pat Robertson.
Remember, any candidate or elected official is there by choice, and if they don't like the scrutiny and prefer privacy, they need not run for office. But once they do, their life becomes an open book, and justifiably so.
