Re: Plastic Aeroplane Safety Questions?
I've spoken with some guys who are attempting to build a classic aircraft out of composites to avoid certain structural problems in the original. When finished it should look just like this:

Ed Zachery. They don't want to be identified until it's ready to fly, but they assured me they've Scaled their Composites correctly.Crumple wrote:That's a Fokker if it falls to bits in midflight.Gawdzilla wrote:I've spoken with some guys who are attempting to build a classic aircraft out of composites to avoid certain structural problems in the original. They'll get it sorted eventually. Each fatal aircrash with this stuff will point to a greater understanding of any weaknesses. Eventually it will be safe to fly in a plastic toy aeroplane just like the real thing.

Give it another 20 - 30 years and we'll all back to flying in wood and canvas planes again.

They don't like lightning? Maybe they should coat them in foil but that'd lose the weight advantage I suppose, will have to wait for the first couple of these to drop out the sky I guess?

Air France Flight 447: NASA research shows greater lightning danger for composite aircraft
As the search continues for missing Air France Flight 447, which disappeared during a thunderstorm over the Atlantic Ocean, speculation is rising that the Airbus A330-200 could have been hit by lightning. NASA has long done lightning research focusing on aircraft, launches, and ground equipment.
Studies from Langley Research Center show:
... traditional aircraft act as Faraday cages when struck by lightning, which means that the charge stays on the exterior of the aircraft. However, as more aircraft are built using composite materials, we will need to understand the direct and indirect effects of lightning on those aircraft. The researchers at LaRC are studying the hazards of lightning on composite aircraft. Some of the issues include the fact that magnetic flux can penetrate avionics wiring, and that lightning damage is often more severe than tests would predict
The Air France flight sent an automatic signal noting electrical problems just before it vanished about 190 miles northeast of Natal, Brazil. The aircraft carried 288 people.

composite airframe + fly by wire + lightning strike = AAAAAAAAHHHHHH FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
