But Maccabi Healthcare Services reported Thursday that out of 416,900 people it had vaccinated, only 254 had gotten Covid-19 a week after their second dose. What’s more, all of the cases were mild. Comparing these rates to unvaccinated people, the researchers estimated that the vaccine has an effectiveness of 91 percent.

The results are all the more striking, experts said, because Israel is contending with a worrisome new variant of the coronavirus. The variant B.1.1.7 now accounts for up to 80 percent of the samples tested in Israel.

First identified in Britain in December, the variant has spread to 72 other countries and may be up to 50 percent more transmissible than other variants.

Israel leads the world in vaccinating its citizens. So far, more than a third of its population of more than nine million people has received a first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and nearly two million people have received a second dose.

While it is true that viruses don't care who you vote for, it is also misleading because infections are more prevalent and/or spreading faster among the Republicans than Democrats, both in Congress and the US population at large.

In the House of Representatives, 29 members of the GOP have announced positive tests, making up just under 15% of all Republicans in the chamber.

After Richmond’s positive test, there are now 10 Democrats in the House that have tested positive, along with an additional presumed coronavirus case back in March from Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.), who did not take a test.

The 11 make up around 4.7% of Democrats in the House.

The gap is even more stark in the Senate, where 15.4% of Republicans have tested positive, compared with 4.2% of the Democratic caucus. (Link)

My guess that similar differences between progressives and reactionaries can be seen in other countries.

The Dark Horse Podcast had another good talk about the virus and the lab leak hypothesis. They also touched on outdoor transmission, masking in outdoor environments, policy and cultural issues around masking.

I won't be so bold as to say it is interesting, as I don't want to giggle away a bunch of demands that I prove it interesting, or summarize for anyone, but if you want to listen to it, you can find it and let me know what you think. Maybe it is all uninteresting to those who don't want to 'trust the science'.
