Exactly. Went into service in 1918, and is still going strong 91 years later.

I was going to try and stir up a shit-storm by singing the praises of the MG 42, but I decided to leave be. A friend of mine did get to "play" with an MG42 once, when he was an extra in

The 42 is nice, extremely simple to build. (Inspiration for the Uzi?) But it burned through ammo too quickly.

Oh yes. The Brits and the Yanks trained their troops to attack during the frequent barrel changes.
The German MG 3 is basically an improved MG 42 using NATO-standard ammunition.

I've seen "insurgents" using the '42. They didn't know how to handle it.
