Well, ladies - you're taking command. Enjoy it.

Post by Coito ergo sum » Thu Oct 06, 2011 9:21 pm

Here is an interesting article about how women are leaving men in their rearview mirrors and taking over in all facets of modern western society --- the tide is turning - and women are poised to move ahead --- http://www.cnn.com/2011/OPINION/01/11/r ... index.html

Now we'll soon get to see if the old refrain, "If women were in charge, then...." really changes anything.

Well, that's it then, I guess us guys are finished.

Lucky I'm a computer programmer - one of the last male hold-outs. Ronja can't do it all by herself.

Yes, but so in my experience is the bottom 10%.

True dat, especially as I cannot code fast or well myself due to my reading/writing difficulties. But I'm damn good at leading and facilitating a good team of designers and coders (including, of course, a solid sw architect and at least a couple of people who are good with usability and graphical design).

Regarding that link: Looking at the group of young guys I am studying with right now, I see no signs at all that they would be headed for a worse fate than the girls in the course. All seven already have a broad skill set, and they are working on solidifying and extending their knowledge and abilities. And some of the skills they have - professionally and otherwise - could be called "androgynous." For example, not one of them has had any problem with acting as secretary when it has been needed, they all can draw at least tolerably, and they all take initiative to create (good, reader friendly) documentation and to edit/add to/polish documents started by others. Nobody dominates the discussion, and yet nobody stays quiet, either. And they actively ask for each other's opinions, as a matter of course.

Could the future maybe belong to those who can be flexible enough with what they do and how they behave while doing it? Women have long worked on getting fluent at "the good chap" role (I know I have had to work at it, even though I was born a tomboy), and from where I am standing, it seems (young) men are more seldom behaving in traditionally masculine ways - also those who are studying and working with computers.

I'm fine with that. Let them be the breadwinners while I sit home, watch TV and eat bon-bons.

Or, more likely, while I shoot guns and drink beer.

Let them try to legislate away either, however, and their ascendancy won't last long I'm afraid.

I wonder what happens when the entire Congress (or Legislature) comprised of women all start cycling together. Now there's a scary thought... :lynchmob: :fall: :lynchmob: :swoon: :lynchmob: :lynchmob: :panic: :bslap2: :tearhair: :irate:

Not to put a dampener on things, but:

You could be working with a much smarter-than-average group of guys - in fact, I take that as given. All other things being equal, they are likely to be more "flexible" in their outlook, and less bound to stereotypes and macho behaviour. Also, I suspect that working with an older woman (sowwy :pardon:), they are going to be more motivated and focused than might otherwise be the case. They don't want to be "shown up", or seen to be dragging their heels. :hehe:

I wonder...now that women are getting college degrees in vastly greater numbers than young guys....it stands to reason that their salaries will start to outstrip men... dammit! I missed the generation where the chicks are going to have to pick up the whole check....
