You really think they'd get killed in Florida?

I bet they dock in Cuba just to piss the US off.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Good point about Cuba, except that the Iranians don't much like communists...

However, the old "enemy of my enemy" principle may apply...

Should that ever be a valid reason for murdering 200,000 civilians?

Any serious study of the Pacific war agrees that the death toll (both Allied and Japanese) if Japan had not surrended after the 2 atomic strikes would be far higher than the tolal of the weapons themselves....

And murdering is a pointlessly emotive word in the WW2 context; civilian casualties from airstrikes and other military actions were part of the gestalt...

Folks, if there's going to be a barney over dropping the bomb, I really think we need another thread for that one. A very big thread. :shifty:

No, I'm asking whether voluntarily killing thousands of completely innocent civilians is ever right in any context. You seem to think it is.

You seem to think war should be nice Pap. The idea is to kill as many of the other fuckers as possible.
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

It's not right, but it was necessary, there is a very thin distinction between the two, and a lot of those people would have died in the carpet bombing of Japanese cities with conventional weapons had the atomic bombs not been used.

Not a justification, just a historical probability, the soviet army was sweeping across manchuria, the Americans had a massive force assembled on the other side, it would have been every bit as bloody whichever method was used.
The atomic route saved allied lives, the Japanese received the same consideration they gave to their enemies. Not nice, but as I said, necessary.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

But the rules of war are clear that civilians are not to be targets. I know that this rule is broken in all wars, but it still doesn't make it right.
