One should understand history but not fetishise it.

Problem is like the bible you can justify just about anything with history, while there are obviously some facts the 'why' questions as often as much as reflection of the present as they are a method of trying to understand long dead people.Psychoserenity wrote:QFTClinton Huxley wrote:One should understand history but not fetishise it.
History has its place in musuems ,schools and entertainment not in deciding the best way to move forward

Further, the history was advanced, here, to counter the idiotic notion advanced by some of you that owning guns is not based on any rational or reasonable argument. It is. You're wrong. It's not mere paranoia, or psychosis, or the rest of the fatuous, puerile slurs that some morons sling freely about. You can hand-wave away the mountains of rationale and reasoning for gun ownership all you want, but it doesn't make it go away. It just makes you ignorant.
Moreover, you haven't advanced what you think is the "best way to move forward," and why. So, if you wish to ignore history, that's fine. At least tell us what this "way forward" is, and what your reasoned basis for that assertion is.
If you're just going spout off about how crazy the nutters are that own guns and how they are all paranoid lunatics, and then spout off about how 1000 years of Anglo-American law and philosophy is meaningless, deserving only of a place in a museum, then I think you've quite well illustrated the level of cognition that appears to come from the bed-wetters among us.

Deal with change on the basis of pragmatism and reason not ideologyMoreover, you haven't advanced what you think is the "best way to move forward," and why. So, if you wish to ignore history, that's fine. At least tell us what this "way forward" is, and what your reasoned basis for that assertion is.

So, what's the way forward and why? Ban guns? Don't ban them but regulate? What?MrJonno wrote:Deal with change on the basis of pragmatism and reason not ideologyMoreover, you haven't advanced what you think is the "best way to move forward," and why. Understanding history is not ideology. There are good and persuasive arguments made by persons over the years that warrant understanding, and can help in understanding what pragmatic solutions are the best.
Sometimes what appears, at first blush, to be the good pragmatic solution, can, on further reflection and application of the experience of folks who have addressed the issue previously, be shown to not be the way to go. That's the importance of history. We need to understand it because there isn't a lot new under the sun. The mistake the current generation tends to make is in thinking that things are so different that history has no application. That's why we repeat so many errors.

Understand history? Yes, I think so. It's a hobby of mine.Clinton Huxley wrote:Yeah..but you do a bit, don't you.....Coito ergo sum wrote:One should not equate understanding history with fetishising it.Clinton Huxley wrote:Evidence of saying that you did?Coito ergo sum wrote:Evidence of fetishising?Clinton Huxley wrote:One should understand history but not fetishise it.
You called a one paragraph summary of the origin of the right of Englishmen to bear arms as fetishising. What wouldn't be fetishising, based on your test? Could I have alluded to it obliquely, rather than stating it expressly?
Re: US Philadelphia Student Carrying Legal Firearm Shoots It
21st century life would be completely uncomprehensible to people of earlier centuries you might as well ask my cat for advice on how to run society, every day is something new under the sun. The mistake with older generations is their inability to accept that nothing stays the same that ideologies come and go, concepts of morality can rapidly change. Everything you have ever valued may be rejected by the next generation. Who in the 1970's the decade I was born it could possible expect the internet information age or gay marriage becoming the normCoito ergo sum wrote:So, what's the way forward and why? Ban guns? Re: US Philadelphia Student Carrying Legal Firearm Shoots It
You're not saying anything anybody doesn't already know. Of course the needs of society changes. But, that doesn't mean you're right about what you think is the way forward.
Nobody, not even the ancient sources I mentioned, ever said that gun ownership should be completely 100% free and unrestricted to everyone, all the time, anywhere, and whatever kind of weapon.
So, what is your way forward regarding guns. Don't just mish about with generalities about society changing. We all know that. So, what do you want done? Complete gun ban? If so, why? And, if not, what are you suggesting is the way forward?

It's all about you isn't it. If you're so fucking perfect, obviously nobody else will go mental with legally held guns.mozg wrote: I'm human, and I get angry just like everyone else. I don't shoot people because I'm angry with them any more than a chef stabs people when he gets angry with them just because there are dozens of knives at his immediate disposal.
Any fool can see that.

We ought not rush to make laws that restrict the vast majority when the goal is to restrict the nutters.mistermack wrote:It's all about you isn't it.
