Boston Red Sox Historic Collapse - 2011

Post by Coito ergo sum » Thu Sep 29, 2011 1:54 pm

Taking a one-run lead into the ninth inning against the Baltimore Orioles, one out away from a 3-2 victory and an extension of their season, closer Jonathan Papelbon surrendered three straight hits as the Red Sox dropped a 4-3 decision to put their postseason fate into the hands of the Yankees in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Moments later, Evan Longoria homered to give the Tampa Bay Rays an 8-7 victory in 12 innings and the American League wild-card berth, finishing off a historic collapse by the Red Sox, who led the Rays by nine games on Sept. 4.

That's right, Red Sox fans! The Sox were 9 games up, 3 weeks ago, and blew it.

NOTE: yes, yes, yes, Brits...we know we know -- you're going to say that Baseball is just rounders, which is a girl's game in England or something. Let me preempt that by pointing out that boys play rounders too, and that baseball is not the same thing as rounders. Also, you dicks play "cricket" which is far gayer than even "rounders." Plus, you're not even that good at soccer anymore, so shut up about sports until your competitive in the World Cup again.

NOTE 2: in anticipation of the "who cares? You're the only ones who play the sport..." - fuck off again with that, because plenty of other countries play baseball, including the US, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and some other countries. Europe isn't the whole world. Also, Limeys, you have a version of baseball called "British Baseball" played by men, with 11 men on a side, and like in softball, you throw underhanded.

Evan Longoria? Is he anything to Eva? :hehe:

To the extent that I care about baseball anymore I'm a Phillies fan, and I understand they're doing quite well this year.

(More accurately I'm a 1980 Phillies fan...)

Baseball is only watchable in person at the ballpark. Well, except that playoff baseball is watchable on T.V. Most regular season games on television are only good for the occasional channel surf to catch the score and a couple of batters.

But, baseball is an excellent way to kill a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I love getting to a game early, having a couple of brews and the occasional hot dog....very relaxing and entertaining. I'd much rather go to a baseball game than a football game, even though I would much rather watch a football game on television than a baseball game...

But, as for the topic - Red Sox suck ass. Bwahahahahahahahahahhahaha!!!!!11

Looks like Jorge Posada is making a phenomenal diving catch into the stands.

We can't even blame the Curse of the Bambino anymore.

Ah well. Boston loves an underdog. If you can call what I've heard is the second-highest paid team in all of baseball an underdog.

Note: I agree with your assessment of baseball, and I'm not even a fan. But I like to go to games-- and if you grew up in Massachusetts, you are obliged to be a Sox fan, even if you don't care about the sport.

Yeah, but I grew up a Yankee fan, so I am obliged to ridicule the Sox at every turn.

I get to revel in the 1978 Bucky Dent home run -- a scrawny little shortstop parks one over the Green Monster -- three run homer, to put the Yanks up. And, then there is Boone's walk off home run for the win a few years ago. Nice.

And, everyone gets to laugh at the Red Sox for the "Buckner" incident. I know...I know...that still smarts, I'm sure...

And, how about Games 7 of the 1975 World Series....bwahahahahahahhahah!!!! Nice.

I forget the comedian who joked that Buckner really should have just given up and pretended to be insane after the ball went between his legs-- "He should've just dropped his pants and run around the field with a lobster shoved up his ass-- anything to give the crowd something different to remember him by."

Still, the playoffs when we broke the Curse were pretty damn heroic. I think, anyway.

The Pope was today knocked down at the start of Christmas mass by a woman who hopped over the barriers. The woman was said to be, "Mentally unstable."

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.
