I had a real interest in physics when I was a kid. What boy of ten or twelve doesn't want to know how rockets and atomic things work? Completely destroyed by uninspired teaching. That was before health and safety stopped experiments so I'm not surprised how it is today. That's what is missing in Dawkins book...simple and exciting experiments. :read:

I felt I was being mauled by a dead sheep reading the book - so what a kid of twelve will make of it? :smoke:

Just read the first chapter. Does a good job of explaining the scientific method and how we know what's real finishing with a brief description of natural selection. It's nice and colourful and the illustrations whimsical.

Seriously. Is there some place I could ask that?

My college son has my Selfish Gene. He got to page 20. Maybe this is better.

It has pictures :teef:

But seriously, he might find it patronising if you gave it to him.

did you try bill brysons?

i just pre ordered this for my boy and i dont really see what the issue is. Dawkins is a damn good communicator and the illustrations promise to be brilliant.
i assume its an expansion on this which is beautiful in its clarity and certainly not something that will fly over the heads of many school kids.

oh look, page after page after page of kid science websites.

honestly, if you cant be arsed making mega bubble solution or bicarbonate explosion or a non newtonian solution for your kid, or even looking at some bugs though a magnifying glass, or fucking about with a laser pointer and some mirrors, then you probably are missing the point of getting the book in the first place.

I suggest you entertain yourself with soap operas and tabloid papers. They seem to at least record the famous people doing the baby experiment.
