Out of ALL crimes, I would be most worried about the killing of a cop.
The pressure on the police, prosecuters, judges and juries to convict someone is intense.
The police do NOT, under any circumstances, want it to remain unsolved, and will happily frame someone that they think probably did it.
It seems to have happened in this case. The witnesses at the original trial had obviously been leaned on, and the vital shell case, allegedly "found" by a homeless man long after the investigation had finished was pretty obviously planted later, for him to find by arrangement.
He may have been guilty, but fuck me, there is huge doubt in the matter. He certainly got stitched up by the police. It sticks out a mile.
The trouble is that once the "trial" is over, they regard it as sacred. Even if the defence was totally incompetent, no new evidence is allowed that could have been heard at the trial.
And nobody makes much of an effort in the first place, in the case of a cop killing.
So basically, if you're poor, you're fucked.
You can't prepare your own defence, and the state defender will be incompetent and indifferent.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
