Banning guns in a bid to stop violent crime seems to me to be the same logic as banning dessert spoons to cure obesity.

More like banning guns to reduce people shooting each other, and banning dessert spoons wouldnt help but banning or preferable taxing more heavily unhealthy food is certainly something to consider in treating obesity

Then they'll just stab each other or something (which appears to be what is happening here these days).

How about taxing healthy food less. ;)

Food outside restaurants isnt taxed at all in the UK, its sales tax exempt (unless you are counting alcohol as a food of course)

Going back to protection in bear country, I found this :
Spray works rather well. Even at close quarters :

And this is what it's like without :

While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Sometimes.

And anybody with a handgun standing outside that enclosure could have shot that bear from a distance where spray was ineffective.

The best plan is to have both.

The Center has a shoot to kill rule if one of our wolves gets out and is threatening a human. The cascade of events that would lead to that scenario is quite improbable, but we have the protocol if it's needed.

Shit does happen. Chester zoo have had a number of escapes - including a bull elephant that went on the rampage and actually got out of the zoo. The guy who had to shoot it told me that the policy was to stop it by shooting it in the knee/s before killing it.

Yep, that's why we have the protocol. We also have a safety briefing before we go on the tours.

"Ladies, gentlemen, young folks, I have the radio. The staff will communicate to me what they want us to do in an emergency. So, if you hear a beep, buzzer, bleep or bell, look at me. If I'm still there, it's not an emergency."

The incident (along with others) is briefly mentioned here:-
http://www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/chest ... -24108438/
The guy who shot the elephant (Don Dinning - don't even know if he's still alive) was/is Scottish.
He used to do the autopsies on any animals that died and stuff like that.

In Oz, our GST (Goods and Services Tax) is not levied on fresh or unprocessed foods, so fruit, vegies, meat etc. are GST free.
