I have friends and family that have been following the case and involved in demonstrations because of an emotional investment in the case. A combination of the fact that so many people knew Kelly and what kind of a person he was (troubled but by all accounts friendly and quiet spoken) and that so many people have had run-ins with overly aggressive cops both on and off duty. I myself witnessed on a few occasions off-duty officers (who made it clear to those that didn't know, that they were officers) at bars trying to start fights, aggressively hitting on women, and just generally completely ruining the atmosphere and causing people to clear out. I'm sure there are very good guys on the force, but there has been a lot of animosity brewing for a long time that has added fuel to the fire. I'm very relieved that these officers are being prosecuted because no doubt there would have been unrest and possibly riots if that hadn't been the case."Now you see my fists? These fists are getting ready to [F] you up."
Those were the words of Fullerton police officer Manuel Ramos, who is being charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the beating of Kelly Thomas on July 5. The account of what happened that evening, provided today by Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckus, was chilling.
The D.A. didn't mince words, arguing that the use of force on the homeless, mentally ill Thomas was unprovoked, unrelenting and brutal. A second officer, Cpl. Jay Cicinelli, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and excessive use of force.
