You can do way more damage with a glass jar full of gasoline and Tide washing-machine detergent (poor man's napalm) and a match than I can do with my handgun.

When do you propose to start advocating for a ban on gasoline and washing-machine detergent.

And then there's lawn fertilizer and diesel fuel...
I would think you would find that your average person would be more likely to blow themselves up than hurt anyone else with that.

As for it being illegal I'm sure anti-terrorism laws and laws like conspiracy to cause explosions would be sufficient to arrest anyone who was found with washing-machine detergent and petrol on the same table. Types of chapati flour (used by the Asian community for curries) when bought in bulk do tend to get people arrested as they can be used for explosives

1.82 per 100,000.

I don't know what homocide is. In case you want to know what homicide is, let me google that for you.

Please take note that I have not argued that possession of firearms increase the incidence of violent crime, nor have I argued the opposite. Not in this thread, nor in any of the numerous others where gun ownership / gun control is being discussed. To repeat: For the time being I am content to merely point out the threadbareness of Seth's post. He has provided no data at all to back any of it up, and what data are available seem to fly in the face of the crap he is spouting. As far as the hyperbole is concerned, it is all hat and no cattle. It's not the first time either. A few months ago he asked me for figures on crime. I provided them. His reply, and I quote it in full, went like this:
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould

There is only one county on Earth that has people in it who think they can only be safe if they carry a loaded handgun (and no Switzerland isnt one of them where that would be illegal).

Require a weapon to feel safe on the streets = failed state

I know it's an old article but...
http://reason.com/archives/2002/11/01/g ... ed-outcome

Gun crime is just part of an increasingly lawless environment. From 1991 to 1995, crimes against the person in England's inner cities increased 91 percent. And in the four years from 1997 to 2001, the rate of violent crime more than doubled. Your chances of being mugged in London are now six times greater than in New York. England's rates of assault, robbery, and burglary are far higher than America's, and 53 percent of English burglaries occur while occupants are at home, compared with 13 percent in the U.S., where burglars admit to fearing armed homeowners more than the police. In a United Nations study of crime in 18 developed nations published in July, England and Wales led the Western world's crime league, with nearly 55 crimes per 100 people.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I've seen that article and anything that makes any comments on burglaries occuring while someone in their house is quite simply made up as its not a seperate crime and no records are kept of it. Any attempts to compare crimes other than murder which generally tend to leave a body are also meaningless as the definition of a crime and that of its reporting are completely different. Through the 53% of people being at home is beyond absurd, there simply wouldn't be any burgularies after 12 months if it was that high as everyone would be in jail. Burgular normally target empty houses which due to 4-6 week holidays and people reguarlly clearing out at the weekend is very common. They know they won't get caught and for a first offence probably won't go to jail. Would far prefer to have CCTV cameras on every street (I have a flat in London where I actually pay along with my neighbours for one)

The UK does have a serious drinking problem with people with a signficiant % of anyone under 30 getting completed pissed every weekend and fights breaking out in city centres often resulting in cuts and bruises but rarely anything more serious. If we allowed guns to be carried there I think there is a fair chance we could actually beat murder rates but luckily no one would be insane enough to run such an experiment

Actually I used to think that until I went on holiday to Australia and to be honest your drinking culture seemed a lot healthier than ours. Lots of signs at pubs saying don't drink too much from the police everywhere and I just got the impression you lot were actually a bit more sober.

People tend to get wasted less when the weather is good which it never is in the UK so we stay in pubs and drink

Surely in a competition to show who has the better drinking culture the last man standing loses as it shows he drinks too much .

News of someone else being collared for this sort of thing, and with very little delay too:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-17434587
Fabrice Muamba: Racist Twitter comments admitted by Swansea student

A student has admitted posting racially offensive comments on Twitter about footballer Fabrice Muamba.

Liam Stacey, 21, appeared at Swansea magistrates' court after tweeting about the Bolton Wanderers player who collapsed during a FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The 23-year-old, who suffered a cardiac arrest, remains critically ill.

Stacey, a Swansea University student from Pontypridd, admitted a racially-aggravated public order offence.

He was arrested after his comments on the social networking site were reported by other users.

He has been released on bail and is due to be sentenced on 27 March,

Prosecutor Lisa Jones told the court: "Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the pitch and was believed to have died."

The court heard shortly afterwards Stacey posted the offensive comments.

Complaints

Magistrates were told police forces across Britain received complaints following the comments.

Stacey tried to "distance himself" from the tweets by claiming his account had been hacked, the court was told.

Magistrates heard he later tried to delete his page but he was arrested on Sunday at his student house in Swansea.

When interviewed by police, Stacey said he had been drinking since lunchtime on Saturday and was drunk when he made the comments.

He told police: "I was at the bar when I heard what had happened to Muamba. I don't know why I posted it.

"I'm not racist and some of my friends are from different cultural backgrounds."

Bailed

Stacey was close to tears as the evidence was given about his tweets.

The court heard he later texted a friend and said: "I said something about Muamba that I shouldn't have and tweeted back to some people who abused me. Getting police on me now which isn't good at all."

Stacey was told in court that he could be jailed over the comments.

He has been bailed until he is sentenced and has been ordered not to use Twitter and other social networking sites.
