Oh! McKean is GOOOOOD!! I have Gaiman's Mr Punch which he illustrated - very classy!

Pfff, he'd have had more effect on the public consciousness if he had appeared as a fiendish wizardfinder general in a Harry Potter movie.

It's getting good reviews of his friends and Ricky Gervais :hehe:

I'll more than likely get this for me nieces.

It's the clearest and most beautifully written introduction to science I've ever read. Again and again I found myself saying "Oh! So that's how genes work!" (or stars, or tectonic plates, or all the other things he explains). Explanations I thought I knew were clarified; things I never understood were made clear for the first time.

Just reading a few pages on Amazon and I'm sorry to have to say this isn't gonna turn kids onto science. You sense RDs boredom at having to explain things 'below his interest level'; it is palpable. And when explaining things he does it in a way that, whilst very detailed, lacks the flavour of excitement necessary to ignite a childs interest....the illustrations on Amazon review are not exactly inspiring either. It is gonna bomb...and I hope I'm wrong and that Amazon just chose the worst pages by accident. :coffee:

You see how he's being rather tedious here....a chance to excite the kids and their parents about his new book....wasted on justifying. :smoke:

He should be promoting his book on CBBC, not Newsnight :smug:

What he needs to do is what I do several times a year...

Chuck a decent sized lump of sodium into a bucket of water!
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?
And my gin!

Here is another take, maybe more like what Crumple is asking for

I find it very probable, that I will enjoy that book together with my family

I don't think much to the illustrations. Books in the seventies and sixties had better, more inspired, illustrations...I'm not giving this book a special place in that. See how it goes, it'll appeal to swats more than the average kid...most likely those who already had doubts. If it saves one sinner it'll have served it's purpose I suppose? :smoke:

Bringing up the Salem witch trials in the way done here may backfire? I worry he's accidently providing ideas for the machievelian element of that age range? :smoke:

I'm just one of those who don't get all "excited" when people talk science. I've tried to read several books for laymen including one by Asimov and I just get bored.
