At what point do the credits become meaningless. "Avatar" names 752 people. Why?

I always remember the old Indiana Jones credits dragging on for an infeasible amount of time.

I don't think I've ever met someone who worked for months on a film and didn't want to be listed in the credits. Even if your name is last out of 2,000 it's there and it's the only real proof of your hard work. Plus you often get a screener and you get to invite friends over and everyone claps when your name shows up :teef:

I heard someone mutter "A cast of thousands, and every one of them got a credit."

I think you'd have to know in advance where it is, wouldn't you?

Not exactly, you just have to know which section it's going to be in :dunno:

Err, NM my above statement, I just realized you probably meant just the cast. Same deal, but you have to slow down the credits if they are going too fast :hehe:

I was three feet from a 42" TV and could barely read the names.

My understanding is that in Hollywood the contents of the credits - who's in them and in what order, how they're grouped, appearance of the same name under multiple roles, etc. - are defined largely by the various guilds and unions. They're fairly strict and specific, and most movie/TV studios don't want to risk pissing off one group or another by tinkering with them.
Who needs a signature anyway?
