Re: Yet another remake.
I thought the new one was supposed to be a prequel of some sort.
Who needs a signature anyway?

I just remembered having seen mention of "Thing" prequel on AICN.

Christian Nyby directed and Howard Hawks produced the original. That dude is low and slow.

Re: Yet another remake.
Ever since the writer's strike a few years ago, Hollywood has been recycling and regurgitating old properties they already own as a way of minimizing the costs of getting a script.

Re: Yet another remake.
Well they can use some of my original ideas. I have loads. Okay, maybe not loads. A half dozen or so. A handful. Several. Maybe a couple. Alright, one. One really good idea, and then a few others that aren't that bad I guess (if you kinda squint and don't look directly at them but rather focus, like, behind them or something) but not so good as the first one.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Yeah, me too, but then they'd have to pay us for them, which is precisely what they are trying to avoid doing. They don't have to pay a dime for something they already own, and they hire a house writer to "update" the script on salary so they don't have to pay royalties.tattuchu wrote:Well they can use some of my original ideas. I'd give away my story ideas if I could see them faithfully adapted on the screen. Although money would be nice too.Seth wrote:Yeah, me too, but then they'd have to pay us for them, which is precisely what they are trying to avoid doing. Re: Yet another remake.
There are only about 12 basic plots anyway. Something like that.

Re: Yet another remake.
While there are two films based on the short story, the screenplays were adapted from the source in each case (rather than the second being adapted from the 1951 movie) so John Carpenter's is not technically a remake. In that case it isn't really incorrect to refer to it as "John Carpenter's original" since that is the film that they would be remakingGawdzilla wrote:"...though I feel strongly that no film could top Carpenter's original, which in my opinion is still one of the most uniquely awesome horror science fiction films ever made. Re: Yet another remake.
Yeah, the second one was always painful to watch after the original, and the original wasn't all that great. I'm a few months older than the HH version, it's like an old friend. The female lead in that movie was Hawk's girlfriend, IIRC.rachelbean wrote:While there are two films based on the short story, the screenplays were adapted from the source in each case (rather than the second being adapted from the 1951 movie) so John Carpenter's is not technically a remake. Right on the money, except they have always done it. Hollywood is not known for it's risks.Seth wrote:Ever since the writer's strike a few years ago, Hollywood has been recycling and regurgitating old properties they already own as a way of minimizing the costs of getting a script.
Most of the time they buy a script outright rather than pay royalties especially from unproven nobodies. By taking ownership of it they can then do what they like with it. Also there is a world of difference between pulling a half baked idea out of your arse and developing a workable screenplay.Seth wrote: Yeah, me too, but then they'd have to pay us for them, which is precisely what they are trying to avoid doing. Oh I could go on and on. There is money in it sure, but for the time and effort you put in unless you get a couple of hits you'd be better off working in a call centre. I know I've calculated the difference having done both. To be honest for those not wooed to write blockbusters there is more money in T.V. but that is a whole other kettle of fish.
