There'll be enough time for us all to toe the party line later. Why not enjoy being divergent now because this next year or two may be all there is for that...Feck wrote:Oh dear Crumple you missed the point again didn't you .Crumple wrote:Dogs are not necessary. Are we sure that 120,000 of those dogs have been abandoned rather than being feral? It seems a rather large amount.

Re: 120,000 abandoned dogs..
Same thing has been happening here. Worse: people leave pets to starve when they get foreclosed on. It's fuckin' awful.
I took in a tomcat last year whose family had left him behind when they got kicked out of their apartment; a friend of mine fed him for a few weeks, then told me about him. I'm really glad I did; he's a great cat. The local bird population will probably burgeon now he's off the street; this guy was a professional, no question about it. You only gotta see him start ripping the feathers off a flutter toy once before you get the idea. Vet says I saved his life; his bottom incisors were all gone, he probably had about two months left to live before he'd've stopped being able to get enough to eat if he had to catch live food.

Why just simply abandon them? Just put it down if you can't afford them. I think you can get it done for nothing. Letting them loose is terribly irresponsible. You don't want packs of feral dogs running around.

People don't think. Or they get caught, foreclosed on and kicked out and never think of the animal until it's too late to do anything.

Re: 120,000 abandoned dogs..
In the 70's and 80's where I lived there was always a population of street dogs. They weren't all strays, many were latch key dogs, returning home when their owners did and the house was open.
I remember clearly the state clamping down, the hated dog wardens that stole them (and yes that was how many people saw it). There were people who wanted them gone but it wasn't seen as outrageous like it is now and the people wanting to clear the streets of dogs were a little more like those who form a campaign for every new building in their locale - like NIMBYs, dog poo NIMBYs!
The van that came was white with clear lettering. I lived in a Cafe so it was always occupied and had an open door. I remember people shouting that the dog warden was around and the frenzied scurry to gather our mates (K9 pals), tempt them with sausages, get them inside anywhere so they didn't disappear. Over time they disappeared.
Street dogs took their chances with cars, so did kids that played in the streets, the street dogs didn't starve - some were fat, aggressive street dogs had always disappeared, even before the white vans. If I got bitten I'd be asked what stupid bloody thing I did to get bit, too damn right.
There are 65000 dumped kids in the UK. It's sad that some dogs life will end because their abandoned but there's bigger fish to fry and that's said by someone who's always had rescued dogs, always managed somehow, and probably will always have rescued dogs - it's not lack of compassion, just lack of outrage.

I remember the campaign. I'm trying to find it on YouTube, I know it's there, but can't get the key words.

Re: 120,000 abandoned dogs..
To me, as a kid who had an endless supply of cremated sausages (from the cafe), I gave our local dogs names, or the few that didn't have them. I can still picture the individuals, my favourites, the bold ones, the crazy ones, the shy ones - I also remember the fear and tears of that cultural shift. I was as frantic as any kid not to lose my pets but one after another they went just because now it was wrong for a dog to be on the streets. Not only that, but losing one always felt in part my own fault, all of our faults not shifting fast enough to get them hidden.
It was not always wrong.

I used to steal dogs from several council death camps around Scotland Dundee was the best, the kennel staff used to call us when they had a nice dog on the days deathlist we would go pick it up from a shed out back and the management would be none the wiser . I've used countless borrowed IDs to get dogs out of The Aberdeen Auswitz .
