Julian Assange - Assassin Bait?
Julian Assange - Assassin Bait?
Now that smug, self-righteous Julian Assange and Wikileaks have played their hole card and all the unredacted secret information and classified documents stolen from the United States have "leaked" out, leaving Assange with no bargaining chips to protect himself with, how long will it be before one of the people, groups or nations he and his ilk "outed" decides to put a bullet in his head or make him disappear forever?

Re: Julian Assange - Assassin Bait?
Well, if the leaked information is responsible for the death of a US agent, he could be facing the death penalty.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.
Re: Julian Assange - Assassin Bait?
This latest outrage - making all of the cables public, without any redaction of names, has drawn heavy criticism from the rest of Wikileaks as well as from the papers he was working with (Guardian, Der Spiegel, etc.). This move is apparently entirely Assange's doing. I no longer consider him to be intelligent at all: not only has he pissed off many other countries far more than he's even pissed off Uncle Sam, not to mention done his best to undermine the very foundations of international diplomacy, but now his quiver is pretty much empty. Unless he's hiding something significant up his sleeve, he just ran out of cards to play.
I think someone could very well make him vanish, but not too soon. Not until people start to forget about him. And he'll so very richly deserve it.

Re: Julian Assange - Assassin Bait?
It's far worse than that for him. It's an act of war against the United States. He's a spy in collusion with a traitorous spy. If he were a citizen, it would be treason, as it is for Bradley Manning, the US soldier who gave him the data, who ought to have had his neck stretched by now.Ian wrote:This latest outrage - making all of the cables public, without any redaction of names, has drawn heavy criticism from the rest of Wikileaks as well as from the papers he was working with (Guardian, Der Spiegel, etc.). I believe it would be perfectly legitimate for the US to stuff a Hellfire up his ass from a drone, or send in a SEAL team to put a pill in him like they did Osama. He's every bit as much an enemy combatant as Osama and therefore a legitimate military target. So is Wikileaks, and everyone who works for or with Wikileaks, including the "secure" bunker facility in Switzerland that has the servers it uses. We should diplomatically force the Swiss to take Wikileaks down or drop a bunker-buster on it if they don't.
I hope his fear eats away at him every night and day for the rest of his sorry, short life, because his actions are getting American soldiers and others killed as we speak.

Sedition, not treason surely?
Heh. I think he's more likely to end up in one of those anonymous prison complexes, but I have a suspicion he has not quite blown his load quite yet, keep watching.

Re: Julian Assange - Assassin Bait?
Assange is a hero, and so is the soldier.
He's giving the people what the government want to keep from them. The truth.
If you want to tamely believe the shit you are fed, good luck to you.
It puts you on a par with pigs. Brainlessly gobbling up anything thrown to you.
Assange is just the start. Those sites won't go away, they are here to stay now.
And eventually people will have to behave properly, because keeping stuff quiet will be much harder.
Good luck to him.

While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
Re: Julian Assange - Assassin Bait?
He's not a US citizen, so it cannot be treason. Might be treason against the UK, but that's a stretch. No, he's an enemy combatant and a spy and should be treated as such.Audley Strange wrote:Sedition, not treason surely?

Revealing diplomatic and military secrets wholesale merely because one has access to them and merely because one disagrees with the actions of a government is not "furthering democracy" or keeping anyone "honest." It's just anarchistic atavism, and it's made the world a more dangerous and unstable place, not a more peaceful and "democratic" one.Gawd wrote:Oh, this is rich. Re: Julian Assange - Assassin Bait?
In war, the civilian populace are not entitled to "the truth," if by "the truth" you mean military strategic and tactical secrets that give the enemy the information they need to defeat our troops, and in diplomacy, revealing such secrets destroys the agreements by which nations remain at peace, which results in war, death and destruction.mistermack wrote:Assange is a hero, and so is the soldier.

There's a perfectly good reason that the military and the State Departments of every nation on the planet keep secrets. Just because you aren't entitled to know about it doesn't mean there is some maleficent motive involved. You don't need to know such things, which is why they are secret. If you want to tamely believe the shit you are fed, good luck to you.
It puts you on a par with pigs. Brainlessly gobbling up anything thrown to you.
That's why an example has to be made of Assange and his ilk. We need to make it perfectly clear that such actions will result in the harshest of penalties because such actions destabilize the world and make it more difficult to maintain peace and more likely that wars and insurrections will break out and people will be killed in large numbers.Assange is just the start. Those sites won't go away, they are here to stay now.
Your notion that "information must be free" and that there is no legitimate reason to keep military and diplomatic secrets is juvenile and ignorant. And eventually people will have to behave properly, because keeping stuff quiet will be much harder.
He's gonna need it, but I doubt he's gonna get it.Good luck to him.

Re: Julian Assange - Assassin Bait?
Even if your specious slur were true, destabilizing international diplomacy and revealing tactical and strategic military secrets only serves to perpetuate conflict and destruction. Remember that it's not just Americans who have been outed, it's the diplomatic secrets of many other nations, many of whom are trying hard to remain delicately balanced on the razor's edge of uneasy peace with one another, and revealing the content of diplomatic negotiations is likely to tip the balance to open conflict.Gawd wrote:Only more dangerous for American greed.Seth wrote:Revealing diplomatic and military secrets wholesale merely because one has access to them and merely because one disagrees with the actions of a government is not "furthering democracy" or keeping anyone "honest." Of course it seems very much like global thermonuclear war is what you're aiming for, which doesn't surprise me at all.

You're at level 11, Seth. American has constantly been at war for the past 60 years. Guess you believe your "civilians" should never know anything....Seth wrote:In war, the civilian populace are not entitled to "the truth," if by "the truth" you mean military strategic and tactical secrets that give the enemy the information they need to defeat our troops, and in diplomacy, revealing such secrets destroys the agreements by which nations remain at peace, which results in war, death and destruction.mistermack wrote:Assange is a hero, and so is the soldier.

American is a natural at creating & stiring shit up, it doesn't need help destabilizing anything. And just exactly what "tactical and strategic military secrets" are you trying to hide? That Israel and the USA are the only ones threatening to use nukes?Seth wrote:Even if your specious slur were true, destabilizing international diplomacy and revealing tactical and strategic military secrets only serves to perpetuate conflict and destruction.
