As well as El Reg, a lot of other prominent UK sites seem to be also unavailable (YMMV), perhaps because of fallout from trying to fix the hack.

It was a SQL injection attack on the DNS provider NetNames:

I used to have a Legion of Doom World Internet Tour '91 T-shirt, it had a big list of domains with IP addresses instead of cities and dates.
Not that I ever did anything naughty back then.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.
