If you haven't read the long version of SIASL then you completely missed the best thing he ever wrote; the short version is a caponized piece of shit. It's worth it far beyond 11 (though I admit not much else is).

Heinlein was a pretty good prognosticator, less good at political science. But he knew his fundies. You can't hardly avoid it in the US.

The Brits got rid of 'em after the Restoration, and we been stuck with 'em ever since. Most US citizens don't know who Cromwell was, what the Restoration was, or who the Puritans were. The fundies got it taken out of the history books so they could do the kind of shit the Dominionists are trying to do right now, without anyone noticing. The US Constitution, however, was written by people who very well understood the risk, whose parents and grandparents remembered Cromwell personally, and who deliberately went about making it as difficult as possible to establish a theocracy here.

In other words, it's happened before.

Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

No, no, no, you want to be the penetration agent &c. What you're referring to as a "penetration agent" is generally called a "penis." I think... this board's a bit wild.

My wife and I actually shook hands and promised to leave the country if Sarah Palin were ever elected President by a majority or voters. The same would apply to Bachmann and, as far as I can tell, perhaps Perry.

Maybe the UK or Australia would have us. I doubt we'd move to Canada - it's too damn cold.

nope. Star Beast his best book. After he 'grew up' he became too much a social commentor/philosopher.

Hubbart wrote something , i believe, that goes sumting like: If you want to become wealthy start your own busines; if you want to become filthy rich, start a religion.

But Battle Field Earth still a good book

I liked Star Beast when I was 12. Reading it again as an adult and in the original was a serious disappointment. (then again, re reading many RH books with the advantage of some maturity and wider knowledge of SF as opposed to the young noobs "ZOMG, it's by **** so it has to be great" attitude proved to be a more frequent disappointment that I'd have liked). He HAS written some books that withstood the test, and others which may still have received more indulgence than they actually deserved... just they are not a crushing majority of his work. Actually, there are days when I wonder if most of his works are not "young readers" stuff, simplistic and geared to appeal to the adolescent rather than the mature mind... and yep, that does include his excessive fondness for sex... then again, I've classified some authors as crappy because of extreme, gratuitous, and abusive introduction of sex in books that have no business being porn... the sex being bad and generally not seriously interesting/stimulating may have to do with it too... if there's one thing that's worse than gratuitous sex, it's badly written gratuitous sex.

Porn is its own genre for good reason... and several hundred pages of softporn interspersed with mindless, reference driven "adventure", like number of the beast, do not a decent book make, let alone a good one.

and LRH is most likely the very worst SF writer ever, I tried a few volumes of his fiction, could never finish one.

Perhaps you might have a look at the thread's title. It's not about "what the Christ taught". It's about "why should we tolerate the christian right". Audley Strange is not talking nonsense. His post is relevant to the topic. Yours is not.

Well since you jumped to conclusions without reading on and assume that my self confessed hyperbole (for effect considering the over-exaggerated hysteria with regards to other pernicious ideologies) was genuine. AND to assume because of that that I am ignorant of the Synoptic, Canonical and Apocryphal blatherings of Yahweh Junior and his little cult evinces to me that your respect is about as useful and valueable to me as Gonorrhea would be.

It's pure fearmongering mendacity.

There is no evidence whatsoever that any of the current presidential candidates are interested in creating a Christian "dominionist" theocracy even if they could, which they can't.

Just because someone happens to believe in Jesus, like Barack Obama does, doesn't mean they are closet theocrats.

What a maroon!
OK I guess you will be voting for Perry and The NAR when the time comes as I have always suspected YOU Are a Christian right up to the point the collection plate lands on your lap ... I've said it before your views and opinions are welcome on Rapture Ready ......
