Re: Tolerate the Christian right ... WHY ?
Summary please?
Re: Tolerate the Christian right ... WHY ?
With Tim Pawlenty out of the presidential race, it is now fairly clear that the GOP candidate will either be Mitt Romney or someone who makes George W. Bush look like Tom Paine. Of the three most plausible candidates for the Republican nomination, two are deeply associated with a theocratic strain of Christian fundamentalism known as Dominionism. If you want to understand Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry, understanding Dominionism isn’t optional.
Put simply, Dominionism means that Christians have a God-given right to rule all earthly institutions. Originating among some of America’s most radical theocrats, it’s long had an influence on religious-right education and political organizing.

I managed to watch 3 minutes, then had to take a break. Will watch more when I don't feel quite so nauseous.

Ah, thanks. So the lead candidates have extremist positions. Those are much easier to attack than moderates. "Will you elect a theocracy?"

More on Perry and the NAR
The New Apostles talk about taking dominion over American society in pastoral terms. They refer to the “Seven Mountains” of society: family, religion, arts and entertainment, media, government, education, and business. These are the nerve centers of society that God (or his people) must control.

I'm starting to get worried (low level, but no joke). We will need to implement a modern Underground Railroad to get our 'merkan FRAs into Canada, if one of those !@#$%& ?+§£{!!s starts to look like they are getting elected.

Fuck. No way I'm going to Canada. I'll stay here and kill fundies first. Ayaan, Cunt will take you in, or WB. Re: Tolerate the Christian right ... WHY ?
I wish my voter registration card didn't say Democrat on it. In Maryland, only registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primary election (maybe registered Inpedependents can too, I dunno - but I registered myself a Democrat so I could vote for Obama over Clinton in the Democratic primary three years ago).
I'd love to show up and vote for Perry or Bachmann; help make sure one of them gets the nomination instead of Romney. In the general election Romney's the candidate Obama needs to fear the most, especially if the economy gets worse or if it still feels like it's running in neutral gear a year or so from now. Those other two would be squashed like roadkill by the Obama campaign.
This was actually an idea Rush Limbaugh had three years ago. In those states with open primaries, he urged his listeners to go out and vote for Hillary Clinton, because he figured (correctly, IMO) that she stood less of a chance against John McCain than Obama did. Not enough of his listeners bothered.

My wife and I actually shook hands and promised to leave the country if Sarah Palin were ever elected President by a majority or voters. The same would apply to Bachmann and, as far as I can tell, perhaps Perry.Ronja » wrote:I'm starting to get worried (low level, but no joke). Maybe the UK or Australia would have us. I doubt we'd move to Canada - it's too damn cold.

Re: Tolerate the Christian right ... WHY ?
I'm seriously considering changing my party affiliation to Republican so I can vote in the primary. Perry has a commanding lead in the polls, showing yet again how fucking stupid the American electorate actually is. I would love to see Huntsman doing better, he is as rational and articulate as you're going to get in the GOP.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

At times like these I am glad to live in South Africa. We have a lot of shit over here: An extremely high crime rate; political corruption; extremely high vehicle and house prices, etc. But at least religion is not visible in the public realm.

It's ok. The real powers that be in the US have the Christian Right on a leash. Granted, it's a rather long leash, long enough to make the dog sometimes forget that it's on one, but it's there. And that dog is getting more and more tired each year.Dries van Tonder » wrote:At times like these I am glad to live in South Africa.
