Impending Doom of the Week (East Coast USA edition)

Post by drl2 » Fri Aug 26, 2011 2:04 am

Hurricane Irene's supposed to hit here pretty hard over the next few days - the governor has declared a state of emergency, mandatory evacuation has been ordered for non-residents at the beach communities downstate, and major evacuation efforts are underway in parts of NJ and MD. I'm far enough north that New Jersey and the Delaware Bay will serve as buffers - we probably won't get the 100mph winds they're predicting for further south, but it sounds like we're in for a nasty storm... so if my post count's exponential growth rate pauses for a few days, it probably means the power's out.

try hard not to panic

panic is well over rated. been there, done that, discarded the T-shirt

take things in order of priority:

1. buy a generator to keep us up to date on chaos, mayhem and confusion

2. keep us posted on said destruction

3. make shurrre you video the worst and post here

4. bring in the cat

5. bring in the potted plants

6. make some sort of effort not to be killed

I'm not the panicky type - I generally skip right over panic and proceed directly to "Well, this is gonna suck," without a lot of drama in between.

Phones and cameras are charging, flashlights are tested, pantry is stocked with non-perishable food, and we've got a half-dozen gallon jugs of water (in addition to various other bottled beverages) filled up just in case.

I'm kind of wishing the worst of it would get here by tomorrow so I'd be able to get a day off work out of it, but noooo... it has to hit us on a weekend! :)

I'm in DC. The powers that be couldn't get me with an earthquake on Tuesday, and they won't get me with a hurricane this weekend. I am invincible! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

I believe the quake was God trying to punish New York for gay marriage. He hit Virginia, which suggests either his aim isn't what it used to be, or he was firing a warning shot of some sort.

Why God, :bored: why blame a supernatural entity? Try seismic shift of tectonic plates: The large water reservoirs; too many people jumping up and down blaming God for their inadiquacies; nuclear testing in N. Korea? or, the butterfly that emerged when pupae was deep undergroung somewhere of the coast of Fiji?
will a spell test fail me? :ask:

any cachaça? If so, dont forget the limes. And, for goodness sake, dont use brown sugar. That misses the whole POINT

You messed up the quotes there - not to worry, many newbies do. Shall I fix it for you? (the edit time slot is kind of shortish, sorry for that)

I wasn't actually blaming God, just regurgitating what one of his followers said. Just as I didn't blame Santa this year for once again failing to leave a nymphomaniacal supermodel under my Christmas tree. :dunno:

The state has ordered mandatory evacuation for anyone living within 3/4 mile of the ocean or bay - we're about 5 miles inland. Most businesses are closing down early today (I'm home early), the roads are getting crowded, and lines are forming at the gas stations.

Come on, Irene
