Air hose leaves factory worker unable to work after severe injury to rectum

Durrant suffered a 15cm (6in) tear in his bowel and severe damage to his intestines.

He underwent hours of surgery to save his life after the incident at a static caravan plant.

The electrician’s ordeal began as he was working on some wiring while the pressurised air hose was being used behind him.

The 26-year-old said: ‘The next thing I knew, I felt this strong air blown on my legs from behind and then something went up my rectum through the shorts I was wearing.

‘It felt like I had been blown up – it was the biggest shock of my life. There was air fizzing around in my back passage and stomach, it was so weird.’

Mr Durrant said the shock soon gave way to agony, adding: ‘I just can’t put in to words how painful it was.’

I think we had a thread or two about this before - they were merged... (starting a search)

The same thing can happen with a sufficiently strong jet of water.

I've often experienced a highly dangerous blast of air in that area, but it's always been travelling in the other direction.

It sounds to me like something was going on which they'd rather not mention.

This happened in Ireland once too.

We had a 5,000 psi air compressor at the liquid oxygen generating plant where I worked. One day when the plant was at full operation a pipe failed and part of it went through a concrete wall and the cab of a truck parked outside, landing a few hundred yards away. We then go permission to put up 1/2 inch steel plates between the compressor and our control panel.

Sounds like horseplay on the job. Air hoses don't just start spewing air up people's bum's. My guess is that some co-worker thought it would be funny to shove a nozzle against his backside and give him a shot.

Damned right he should sue.

The other danger is air embolism where air can be injected right into a blood vessel. The air bubble can lodge in the heart, lungs or brain and kill you.

I accidentally blasted a small chunk of skin off my knee when I was power-washing my house a few weeks ago.

But that's a different kind of compressed air...

You can, but it doesn't compress much.
