I don't see anything accidental about this. Advertisers know that all publicity is good publicity. Well, nearly anyway.
Something like this, mildly offensive to only the most sensitive people, won't lose many sales, but it will get the name of Nivea discussed on the tv, in the papers, and in the chat websites. To most people, the only lasting memory is the name Nivea.
They can't lose.
Neither. Of course it wasn't an accident, someone would need to be brain damaged to the point of non sentience to put all that together without taking one look and saying "you know the groups established to whine about such things are going to whine about this."
I'd be interested to see what remit the dark sorcerers that Nivea hired were given because I can see no way they would do something like this without express approval from the company.
Controversial advertising campaigns are risky to pull off and while they might not destroy brands they can cause Marketing agencies to lose all reputation overnight.

The guy in the first ad is black? He looks white to me

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Seriously, though. I just clicked on the link to the main article and looked at a larger pic. Dude still looks white to me. Maybe a good tan, but still white

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

They're both removing the mask of the "savage" to reveal a "civilized" person underneath.
So it bullshit in both ads.

I think their next advertising campaign should be "Moisturiser, not just for girls and poofs"
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Re: Is this stuff really racism?
I wonder who writes in to complain about such stuff?
Dear Nivea, I felt your advertising campaign was not as effective as it might otherwise have been.

Better still when people write doctoral theses on what is clearly paridola (sp?) in advertising. One gal did that, drawing all kinds of lines on adverts to "prove" that there were sexual messages hidden in them, especially ones that demeaned women. A respondent took the same pictures and found cartoon characters.

Anti-racists complain, not necessarily product users.HomerJay wrote:I wonder who writes in to complain about such stuff?

But you agree the example that starts this thread isn't a contrived complaint?Gawdzilla wrote:Better still when people write doctoral theses on what is clearly paridola (sp?) in advertising.
