For the past four days I've been feeding a stray cat that is living in the woods near the gate house at the Endangered Wolf Center. (Enter that in Google to see exactly where I mean.)

Today she let me pet her and pick her up, but got spooked when a big truck came through the gates. She was interested in the cat carriers I had next to me as I sat on the ground. I think she recognized it as similar to the last thing she saw of her once-family before she was dumped there.

So, tomorrow, instead of putting the tin of cat food on the ground, I will put it just inside the cat carrier. If she's consistent she will nudge it toward the back as she eats, and will follow it into the carrier. Then I close the door.

I'm conflicted that she is trusting me and I'm planning to betray that trust to trap her.

What are you planning to do with her once you've captured her? I'm assuming you want to make her safe and take care of her in some way? I don't think that's a betrayal.


I lured a stray cat my son had been feeding outside for some time into a basket so I could get him to a vet for treatment of yet another nasty absess, and desexing ... the desexing was in the hope he'd not get into so many cat fights, which cause the absesses ... Got him to the vet (who took care of the absess and the neutering, and gave us a discount), then brought the cat home and kept him in a quiet room while he recovered. After that he wanted to be inside with us ... he's become a completely tame, mostly indoor cat, and seems very happy and content. We call him Tom.

She gets turned over to one of the keepers, so she'll be taken care of. Pam asked me to catch her, and I've had experience with this before. Food works very good on animals that have been dumped. When she started talking to me the other day I knew she wasn't a feral, they tend to vanish quickly when humans are around, very smart animals. Plus inspection showed that she has no front claws. As they tell me she's been living there for two months or so that indicates a formidable huntress.

He had the male cat equivalent of a vasectomy. We call it desexing or neutering. Some call it spaying.

It's recommended to reduce cat fighting and unwanted litters.

The RSPCA won't rehouse a cat, male or female, without first ensuring it has been neutered.

Cats are an introduced species in Australia and are considered a threat to native wild life. Feral cats, in particular.

I doubt she wants to be out there in the first place. The fact that she's attempting to bond with you is, to me, pretty clear indication that she wants you to help her get to a better place. She may not understand your method, but I think ultimately you're doing what she wants you to do.

Oh, btw, as we found her by the gate house and considering her reaction to something to eat that doesn't need to be hunted down and killed, I've named her "Gates McFamished".

I was only messing with you Charlou! I knew what you meant.

It is part of my ongoing campaign to stop society from using the word "gender" when they really mean "sex".

I read one study on ferals in the US and spay/neuter programs. The population count was taken at the end of one cycle for a defined area, a jetty. Counts were made every month after that for three years. The original population of fixed animals, after thirty-six months, was down about 50%, but the overall count was only slightly less. The conclusion of the study was that unfixed animals were moving in and pushing out the fixed animals, and that the spay/neuter program had very little effect on the population as a whole. Once again, trying to artificially control a wild community had no effect. Caveat: That's just one study, I didn't follow up on it. I read it in the VetMed Library at Purdue while waiting for Brenda to go to lunch.
