Either gallstones thinks that keeping fit and outrunning rapists really IS the answer, or else it was flippant.
If it was serious, it was no less daft than keeping your hair short.

I'm sure they are, but Gallstones was fit at the time, and still got caught and raped. (Because of the long hair) So I didn't take that as a serious comment.

Since the intention of the original OP was to get information on how a person could prepare ahead of time and have the best chances of coping with a sexual assault, I provided some information from my perspective.

To suggest that a person be fit is hardly flippant. My point is not that being in good physical shape would prevent it happening, but it does facilitate resilience that a person who is not in good physical shape would have. Psychological resilience from mental competence when endurance and strength is needed; and physical endurance to better withstand and recover from injuries. A fit person is going to be more physically competent under conditions of escape. Surviving and getting away is better facilitated when one is athletic. Remember, I had to walk 7 miles to get to safety. If I couldn't have done even that, My straights might have been even more dire.

Can I still do that today? Yes. I do do that today.

You are missing the point. Gallstones was referencing a particlar situation that had happened
to her and in light of that experience has passed on practical information. Considering what she
was acknowledging here - something very personal - how did you come to the conclusion that you did
At the very worst her advice could be construed as slightly naive - given the fact that it is zero guarantee
against being raped per se - but that is only adopting an incredibly negative interpretation of what she has
stated. That aside - and I am only playing devil's advocate here - how on Earth do you think her advice is flippant

No it diidn't. I did explain why it was pertinent. You may choose to continue to misrepresent my point if you think it suits your point. But your point does not address my reasoning.

Short hair would not have been a guarantee of any certain result either. That is why your point has no legs.

I also have to say I am getting a bit upset having to defend my reasoning and what happened as if I--me--made a mistake.

Having long hair--a fashionable norm of the day--did not make me to blame. I did nothing wrong in having long hair.

Also, I wasn't murdered, but I am not whole either.
So, what does it mean to have survived? It is a question I have asked myself many times.

False dichotomy as evidenced by my subsequent address of this very allegation.

To be flippant, if I am, is not wrong either. It is an emotional coping strategy. And it isn't the end strategy or a complete strategy. If I was to do it at all, it would be my attempt to gain some psychological distance--respite--from the emotions. Or to stop the discussion of it so I didn't foolishly disclose anything to someone who I didn't deem worthy to know.

Quite frankly, all these years later, I still haven't reached the point where I can be flippant about it.
