I've no doubt it will, and whether you want to believe it or not, guns are important. They make more of a statement than a baseball bat. We're headed for a big fucking shitpile, the lot of us. UK, US, Europe, Asia - the whole shebang. Too many people and too few resources, that's the root issue. When society can no longer afford the bread and circuses the proles will riot and open the city gates to the barbarians. Whether it happens in the next year or next decade or even in my life time is the only question. But we're (meaning my extended family) better prepared than most. We've got land in the mountains and on the coast, generators and private water supplies, guns and ammo, food and seeds. Got engineers, mechanics, a doctor, a dentist and farmers. Most of us know how to hunt and fish. I fancy our chances a lot more than most people's. At least we've thought about it and taken some steps rather than simply relying on Da Gummint to take care of things.Crumple wrote:
It's just time before the US erupts in a similar fashion. But you'll be fine since there's guns over there.

Basic training is usually given at the road maintenance depot, and you learn a lot on the job. You will
also be given health and safety training and may need to gain a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification
Scheme) card. You will probably work towards qualifications, such as a level 2 NVQ in roadbuilding
(construction) or highways maintenance.
Apprenticeships may be available with construction firms, leading to level 2 qualifications. The
ConstructionSkills website (see end of leaflet) has more information on Apprenticeships. Young people
should contact their local Connexions/careers service.
City & Guilds offers qualifications at operative and supervisory level in streetworks excavation and
reinstatement. These are aimed at those already employed in relevant work and lead to the issue of the
Street Works ID Card.
Yeah I can see the average yob who is has been on the dole several years being able to do that!
But other than that, you're pretty spot on. I did that kind of stuff when I was 16.

I thought the Council had a Dept that would hug them, send 'em to Alton Towers and then explain how they were the Victim (of Society / rich people (anyone with a job) / the Tooth Fairy etc etc). and then they would get free sandwichs............which explains why no money to empty the bins regularly.Rum wrote:I want things to return to a time when if you saw a young yob throwing a used sandwich package onto the ground you could say 'Pick that up NOW' and he would be frightened enough to do it instead of stabbing you.

Would legalizing drugs help with pacifying this 'disaffected yoof subculture'?
Re: Tottenham Riots
We don't really put people in jail in the UK for possession (unless there are aggravating factors like the wrong skin colour etc) and I doubt benefits would cover the cost of even legal drugs so I don't think thats a biggie in the UKIronclad wrote:Would legalizing drugs help with pacifying this 'disaffected yoof subculture'?

a) thin em out a bit
b) less inclined to get off the sofa
c) the money saved (about £100 Billion a year - from both the legal system and the "do gooder" industry) could be spent locking up those who do actual crimes (street robbery - 5 years, in jail (not out in 3 months for good behaviour)....might not rehab them, but they won't be robbing anyone for 5 years. and won't be revolving around the judicial system multiple tines.......

Re: Tottenham Riots
The ridiculous prohibition of drugs certainly does engender an anti-authoritarian sentiment in all sorts of people who fall victim to unwarranted police intrusion. The police are doing themselves no favours in upholding these laws and performing stop-searches on random teenagers because of their clothing when kids from nice areas face no such harassment from police despite the fact they're just as likely to be in possession as anyone else.Ironclad wrote:Would legalizing drugs help with pacifying this 'disaffected yoof subculture'?
Legalisation would also free up an enormous amount of prison space and allow for longer sentences for crimes which actually damage society such as assault, robbery, murder etc.
It would also remove many street dealers from council estates, cutting off the unclean supply of drugs sold there which are a massive burden on the health service. It will also stop a lot of these teenagers selling drugs as a replacement for a job, thus forcing them to look for real work. It will also break a cycle of criminality. Many teenagers use drugs regardless of social class, but if you're poor and from an estate you're far more likely to end up being arrested and given a criminal record. A criminal record alone will seriously hinder your already low chances of moving up in the world. It may go some way to stop both users and dealers going to prison in the first place.
We create an awful lot of recidivist criminals through prohibition because of the nature of drugs use and the black market which sells them. If any of these aspiring entrepreneurs want to sell drugs they can do it legitimately and under government licence, contributing tax, and not feel harassed by authority for something which the vast majority of people wish to see legalised.
Prohibition has caused an enormous amount of social damage and the rot is only just coming to the surface. We have created a class of criminals out of thin air, a criminal class which shouldn't even exist, and having removed much of their social mobility through slapping them with criminal records and prison sentences, they have become angry and disconnected from wider society and turned into a criminal fraternity which only has allegiance to themselves. Legalisation wouldn't undo the damage done to the current generation but it would go a long way to helping future generations integrate into wider society. Drug use is not a marginal activity, it is a common activity and legitimising it and removing the stigma and criminality from it will benefit all of us.

Simply legalise growing your own dope, perhaps even small scale selling of your excess crop, most would be able to smoke it all the time, so they'd all be too stoned to riot...MrJonno wrote:We don't really put people in jail in the UK for possession (unless there are aggravating factors like the wrong skin colour etc) and I doubt benefits would cover the cost of even legal drugs so I don't think thats a biggie in the UKIronclad wrote:Would legalizing drugs help with pacifying this 'disaffected yoof subculture'?

You may recall that over the last 30 odd years that many people predicted the (inevitable) outcome (breakdown of Society) - those were the people your kind (state sponsored scroungers - unfit for the private sector) labelled racists and nutters or Neo Nazis etc etc, but still took there money (principles only go so far, eh?). Still, now it's your turn to have fun walking down the street hoping that your former valued "clients" remain grateful.......and if not, you get to pay the price to empower them - but this tine using your own money
