Probably the employee is supposed to get to read it during the first couple days of orientation. In practice, I imagine those days may end up being skipped in some cases.

Might be. Typically a company has you sign off that you've received their policies and whatnot and the legal assumption of the signature is that you've read and agree to abide by them.

I've worked at a few places where I've signed their policies and never got a copy of my own. How is someone supposed to remember several pages of legal jargon without their own copy? It seems to me that a contract should not even be legally binding if you can not have a copy of said contract, but I've also noticed that some temp agencies that I have registered for in the past did the same thing.

Only following the advice of the union guy who held a presentation for us when I was a freshman. Never had to regret following this principle, either.

I was talking to a cashier who works at Walmart today and she defended the store saying that even when you are not working there you are still a representative of the company. So how far should that go and how much control should an employer have when you are not at work? Surely they should not be able to fire you over posting your opinions, even publicly, especially if they are not Walmart related. It seems like it could set a dangerous trend if most or all employers start doing such as it would mean that they could fire you over any opinion they don't agree with and you would effectively lose any right to speak or publish your opinion, perhaps almost becoming a mob rule; if you have an opinion that the majority doesn't agree with, keep it to yourself or have a very hard time finding/keeping a job.

Walmart needs a new motto: Walmart. We don't care. We don't have to. We're bigger than this.

They should be called "Arrogance-R-Us". We had a major battle with them when they wanted to put a Wal-Mart within site of the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial, permanently ruining the atmosphere of the place. In Indiana they filled in a wetland for a parking lot, and paid the fine because it was cheaper and faster than going through the proper process, and perhaps being turned down.

They weren't required to undo the work and restore the place? is the statute/case law bad or did they buy the judge?

You don't even have to sign a contract in the UK to accept it. Just staying in your job is considered accepting the contract.

You don't even have to sign a contract in the UK to accept it. Just staying in your job is considered accepting the contract.

This seems kind of tricky. They could then make the contract anything they want and not even tell you about it. Without a signature how can anyone know if you were ever really made aware of the contract details or if you were hired without even being shown the contract?
