I am not sure what to make of the riots over there in England. The world seems to be going crazy. I hope such nonsense doesn't begin over here in the US. Energies are better served going to work and getting shit done, rather than rioting.

I realize this all began with some racial issue of which I am only vaguely familiar, but it seems to have spiraled into some Quadraphenia-like teen angst "eat the rich" rampage. It all just seems so pathetic and sad from over here. I can't even joke about it.

It rained last night, plus they had piles of new electronic gadgets to play with, so they stayed indoors it seems.

Speaking with my own experience of the underclass is do not under-estimate how quickly nihilistic looting will be hijacked by vested interests with a political agenda on the extremes left&right. Do not underestimate how quickly a uneducated chav with 'smart-genes' will latch onto the political game and before you know it be sitting in No.10.....with Camerons head in a box on the box. Stereotypes keep you feeling safe, eh? and your a fool if you think that's a logical position in this ongoing power struggle for the throne.

I view the idea that the riots are caused by the poverty of the rioters with some skepticism. Relative to most of the world, and most people that have ever lived, the rioters are comfortably well off. They are provided for by a relatively large welfare state, have a all their health needs covered, for free I'm told, and have enough food to be not too far behind the United States in obesity rates. They have greater freedoms and liberties than most people who have ever lived, and they have rights as British citizens that are greater than most people who have ever lived. Moreover, billions of people have lived, and currently live, in far greater poverty, for more grinding underclass, and far fewer rights and privileges, and those other billions of people do not riot and disregard the property and rights of others.

I can't help feeling that something else must be moving the mob. I don't know what it is, though.

They aren't comparing themselves to "most of the world", they are comparing themselves to others in their country. Those others have iPods and flat screen televisions, they don't. Those others occupy their evenings recovering from their jobs, they don't have jobs. Those others are part of a socioeconomic system that respects property rights; they aren't.
