You're right this isn't about politics. Let's bring in the army and put a stop to all the politics once and for all !Rum wrote:Its not about right or left right now. Its about public order. You want your house looted?

I am a lifelong socialist but you appear to be so stuck in your political ideology that you don't have the good sense to put out a fire that's burning your house down.
Sure talk - there will be no shortage of that. Sure, provide justification for the rioters, looters and robbers who are shitting on their own neighbourhoods. I am sure there are sound political, sociological and real politic reasons for all of that. I am sure young people are hugely marginalised and have been ignored this last decade or more.
But the first priority must be public order.
Plus I am going to London in 12 days time and I want this sorted out!

I'm not convinced it's ever possible to restore public order with force. You can hold the line, but ultimately you've got to wait until it dies down or you'll just be adding more fuel to the fire. The best thing to do is immediately give the locals the tools they need to start rebuilding the community. Reopening all of those youth clubs that got closed would be a start. Let them know that they haven't been completely rejected from society yet.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Syria tried it, as did Libya after the NATO air strikes started.
Things had progressed a long way beyond civil unrest in Libya before Nato air strikes began. It had progressed to an armed homegrown and grassroots revolution weeks before any Nato airstrikes.

Re: Tottenham Riots
I knew nothing of this until about an hour ago so I've been catching up.
Perhaps I'm being paranoid or are focussing on the wrong thing here, but the news channels reporting on this have been placing emphasis on two main things. The first is that the rioters were organised and secondly that the police were not. The police were too slow in responding, the police were outnumbered in certain places. Now if I recall the police are facing some serious cuts and unlike much of the public sector they cannot go on strike. Could they, in light of recent criticism, simply being politically opportunistic in using this as "operation go slow?"
I think the most depressing thing about all this is that it has evinced without a shadow of a doubt that the pop band The Kaiser Chiefs are our most prescient prophets having predicted a riot several years ago.

Think of all the money you could save if the police started shooting. Not only would the riots end, but I bet most rioters are on some form of benefits.
Shame to miss an opportunity like this.

Tyrannical, you wouldn't by any chance be attempting to incite a virtual riot right here at RatZ? Just asking...Tyrannical wrote:Think of all the money you could save if the police started shooting. Not only would the riots end, but I bet most rioters are on some form of benefits.

I recognize the difference between protests and riots, and I have no tolerance for the looting and arson that goes along with rioting. Since the Police are too cowardly, and it doesn't look like the Army is arriving soon the best defense is armed citizens protecting their neighborhood. I know the UK has some serious gun restrictions, but you are better off with a hunting rifle than a handgun.

Re: Tottenham Riots
Army would be an appalling idea most the people in the area of the riots are totally innocent and even if you shoot one of the guilty ones you are only going to make the riots a 100 times worse
When only criminals carry guns the police know exactly who to shoot!
