What nonsense. Democracy is founded upon people who were willing to confront the forces of the existing power. There is a distinction between looters and rioters.

Many of the middle-eastern protests could be characterised as riots. Are you saying that they should also be shot?

When they start burning and looting, they grow a bulls-eye upon their chest.

When it turns from the mindless criminality into organised revolution, then it might come to that. But what has been seen over the last couple of days would not suggest any kind of coordination of that nature.

Baton rounds, tear gas, some hardcore baton charges would be sufficient.

If they are rioting, torching stuff (arson is a capital crime), looting and hurting people, you give them an order to disperse, perhaps you try some tear gas and truncheons, but by the next day, when the orders to disperse and stay inside have been well published, you begin shooting rioters, particularly masked ones armed with gasoline bombs and other weapons. Suppressing riots is a dirty business, and after fair warning to disperse, it is lawful for the police to use deadly force in most every country in the world. Snipers on rooftops should be picking off the anarchists and gasoline-bomb throwers one by one.

Arson isn't a capital crime on this side of the Atlantic.

In any case, Capital crimes don't really exist over this side anymore, as we don't have the death penalty.

The various riot acts no longer give the police a free hand in their approach to suppressing public disorder.

That hashtag seems to be where it's all happening tonight, though as I said in my post on Youth Unemployment (a totally separate subject which is completely unrelated to any riots and looting) I'm new to this atheism lark so sorry if I'm off-topic.

I don't know about you lot but like jbiebersings I for one am praying for the innocent bystanders, NOT for the idiotic people starting the riots!

The issues are serious and complex. They aren't about the usual polarised, petrified and frankly increasingly tedious positions the far left and far right nit pick over here.

All political issues are complex. Nothing is so complex that extremists can't take polarized and petrified positions about them.

Actually Egypt didn't try that; the Egyptian military mostly stood back and didn't get involved.

Syria tried it, as did Libya after the NATO air strikes started.

This isn't a race riot. Plenty of white *gasp* and asian kids have been looting as well. If anything these riots are a great example of racial harmony amongst my generation.
