English? You can't say nothing with it?

Post by Atheist-Lite » Sun Aug 07, 2011 5:34 am

I can express with a mathematical construct or a graph on paper something very precisely. I try to say something in english and it becomes instantly its own subversion with alsorts of 'nod-nod' meanings. I can hardly speak in english these days let alone form a rational sentence. Is this the evolution of all static languages, to become meaningless and then like Latin, perhaps vanish forever? Is English a Dead Language walking? :smoke:

That pretty much sums me up. I haven't got a clue how English works anymore. Perhaps I never did, but I'm sure I didn't used to have this problem.

I find (as a general rule (which is not always (but usually is) applicable)), that the use of parenthesis (sometimes known as brackets) is helpful in disentangling (.. a word that has a concrete as well as metaphorical meaning) the multiple (and many layered (not to mention nuanced)) meanings that can attach (or for that matter be inferred from) to a sentence (or phrase for that matter (or actually any passage of prose(or text))) in the English language (which is admittedly getting for too complex (for its own good)) these days.

This strategy (or it is a tactic( I am not always sure of the difference) I am thinking of) clarifies your meaning (or intention) satisfactorily so that people (by which I mean men, women and children (as well as intelligent Ratz)) can make at least some stab (or attempt) at meaning (and of course comprehension) concerning the verbal (or textual) utterings (and ejaculations) (now there's a word..) you may come out with.

I hope (quite sincerely) that you find this tip (or hint (or piece of advice for that matter)) helpful.

Incidentally (and in passing), it is raining cats and dogs here (a phrase that must puzzle many a foreigner) and I am bored out of my (tiny) mind.

You sometimes opened brackets without closing them...

And vice versa...

This makes JimC sad...

I think you will find that the number of open and closed brackets match Jim! And if they don't I can't be arsed to sort it out!

I think English can be a precise language, but we tend to use it poorly and fling all sorts of non-useful additions to help obfuscate any distinct meaning. It's a tool but we use it like wallpaper rather than a scalpel. While semantics is much maligned and dismissed, it can be useful to wade through the often ambiguous results of communication in English.

Anything that can be thought can be stated succinctly and clearly, but there also needs to be a consensus between speaker and listener for any statement to be understood.

So what you're saying is English is just another form of cultural imperialism?
