I've just watched the first 3 episodes of Cosmos. What monumental brilliance! deGrasse will have to work hard to bring us something which is even a patch on this.

When did the dumbing down of American science documentaries begin anyway?

About the same time as they did everywhere else, I reckon.

As the world population grows there are growing numbers of stupid people. So dumbing down is a marketing choice here. Always aim for your customers' kneecaps and your message won't go over their head.

Yes, it was a wonderful show. I sort of envy you getting to watch it for the first time.

Just a heavier Lando. Of course I never watched "The Love Boat", despite having been on board it several times.

I don't know, but I've recently learned that the so-called "History Channel" has become little more than a 24 hour one-sided bible documentary station. My mother-in-law has it on all day to help reinforce her beliefs, because if it's on the History Channel it must be true.
Who needs a signature anyway?

Not just religion, any kind of woo. I think TPTB at that channel changed a few years ago. Or they found out where the money was.

Cox doesn't have near the personality of Tyson. Give him a dozen years or so to season and he can take a shot at a 3rd gen Cosmos.
Maybe if he wasn't Northern...

Rather a gritty northerner than some shandy drinking southern fop, begad!
