Northern Ontario mystery creature likely a decomposing mink, says professor

A mystery creature that washed ashore in Northern Ontario and has been dubbed the “Big Trout Lake monster” is likely an ordinary mink in a state of decomposition, said a University of Toronto professor.

The verdict comes on the heels of internet speculation that the creature was a new species or perhaps a bear fetus.

Dr. Mark Engstrom of the University of Toronto looked at photos of the creature Friday and suggested that the creature was of the mustelidae family (which includes otters, minks and weasels).

“What has happened is that some of the hair has come off in the water,” said Dr. Engstrom. “It is silly. This is a dead carcass that has fallen in the water.”

(continued, was it a mink?) :smoke:

Yeh, mink.
I think otters have webbed feet and a more muscular tail, so you should be able to tell them apart. Do mink have webbed feet?
I've seen that kind of pattern on animals that have been eaten by a big pike.
The front end was probably digested by the strong digestive enzymes, but the rest of it never made it down to the stomach. So maybe a big pike sicked it up.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
