British tourist mauled to death by polar bear in Norway

The attack happened today in the Norwegian Arctic Archipelago of Svalbard.

"One person has died and four others are injured. Their injuries are serious," Liv Asta Oedegaard, a spokeswoman at the Svalbard district governor's office, said.

She said the five had been travelling with a "British group," but could not confirm that they were all British citizens or say if they were tourists or visiting Svalbard in another capacity.

In a statement, the district governor's office said that authorities had received word of the attack near the Von Post glacier near the district capital of Longyearbyen at around 7:30am (0530 GMT).

"The four injured people are now at the Longyearbyen Hospital... An ambulance is now scheduled to fly the patients to the hospital in Tromsoe," in northern Norway, the statement said, adding the polar bear had been killed.

Then you shoot it or move it if it's in the wrong place ...Obviously sometimes shooting the animal is the only thing you should do ,but it's still sad in almost everyone of these stories that 'the animal was shot ' is the last line . We have an excess of people if some get a little bit eaten so what .I'd swap a few tourists for a Polar bear and shed loads of Chinese for a tiger ..... fuckkit i'd swap Merkins on a one to one basis with Wolves

I think it was right to kill the bear. It would be highly likely to attack again, having discovered how puny humans are. And more attacks would be bad for the species.
I favour the survival of the species above the survival of individual bears.

But some organiser is to blame, not the bear.
In an area like that, you would think that they would have taken the basic precautions of erecting an electric fence around their camp, and providing the people with the high volume pepper sprays that you can buy to protect against bears. Bears have a fantastic sense of smell, and would be aware of their cooking from tens of miles away, so they should have been prepared and ready for a visit.
