I don't see how 12 and 13 are mutually exclusive. I don't know what to pick now.

Re: Political persuasion poll
There seems to be a built in assumption on the 'right' that socialism automatically results in a reduction in freedom and liberty. It is a fallacy that the right play on a great deal.
Re: Political persuasion poll
"No discernible political leanings" is aimed at what Dante called "moral drifters," in this case those who go through their life oblivious to or deliberately ignorant of politics. You know, people who just go with the flow, no matter who is in charge, who don't bother to vote or participate in any way in politics.Animavore wrote:I don't see how 12 and 13 are mutually exclusive. Mixed left & right.
Economics: Slightly left of center capitalism.
Social issues: Decidedly left/libertarian.
Foreign Policy issues: Totally mixed, depending on the issue. All in all, I'm a big believer in what Joesph Nye refers to as Smart Power, an appropriate mix of Hard Power (military/power projection, realpolitik, threats, covert action, etc.) and Soft Power (diplomacy, economics, culture, international alliances/cooperation), and situationally dependent.

Whose freedom and liberty? How is individual freedom and liberty enhanced by being subject to the whims and caprices of the collective?Rum wrote:There seems to be a built in assumption on the 'right' that socialism automatically results in a reduction in freedom and liberty. Re: Political persuasion poll
I treat all politicians and governments as a necessary evil. They should understand that they are there to serve ME (along with the rest of the population) and that their importance is directly proportional to how efficiently they deal with such matters as sewage treatment and rubbish collection.
I subscribe to no political party nor ideology. The best government is the one that allows me to do what I need to do with the least interference. However, a part of that non-interference is that they adequately police the streets, provide support to the weakest in society, protect the borders, etc.
I vote for whoever I feel will get on with the job the most efficiently. I didn't vote for the shower of cunts we have in Britain now though. So I guess that makes me a socialist. in fact, seeing as this is s Seth thread, simply living in the UK makes me a socialist and probably borderline communist!

Voted mixed left, right. Every test I've ever done places me just left of centre though way more toward liberatarian than authoritarian.

Pretty much sums up my views of politics. No leanings. All politicians are parasites and voting just encourages them.Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.

Re: Political persuasion poll
In some respects, certainly. However, I see social welfare as an essential part of a government's job and do not believe that it can ever be adequately provided without government intervention. I also see regulation of business in order to protect workers from exploitation as essential. Oh, and I understand and approve of the need for taxation of individuals and businesses in order to fund such things. So, not all that libertarian.Seth wrote:You sound very Libertarian to me.Xamonas Chegwé wrote:I treat all politicians and governments as a necessary evil. Re: Political persuasion poll
How is "libertarian" different from old style liberal? And aren't they both a subset of "mixed left and right"?
"Mixed left and right" sounds like the "cheese/bacon" choice to me, considering people are using for things like "mixed left and more left".

Re: Political persuasion poll
Can we keep the derails to a minimum, please. This thread is in a serious forum. A healthy balance of 75% politics 25% celery is acceptable - a higher celery content and I will have to split off a derail and that involves... WORK!

Re: Political persuasion poll
Mixed left & right. There isn't a party that has all policies with which I agree, though probably UKIP comes closest.

There is also a definitive lack of Green in the options...
"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J
