Actually, yes, it is. Socialist influences in our country are the direct proximate cause of the current economic crisis and the root of most of the economic distress suffered in this country (and every other).

It was the socialist pretensions of Carter, made manifest in the Community Reinvestment Act and subsequent socialist influences of people like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd that lead quite directly to the housing bubble and eventual melt-down.

Absent the CRA and Frank's abuse of power to coerce banks into making loans that, in a free market, they NEVER WOULD HAVE MADE because the risks were known and too great, neither the housing construction bubble, nor the inevitable melt-down when the fraudulent debtors who got in over their heads by lying about their financial status, would have happened.

Socialism is very much responsible for our economic ills, and has been since about 1912, with the advent of Progressivism under Woodrow Wilson, and the explosion in socialist government programs and spending under FDR that extended the Great Depression by a decade or more.

Tytler said it well when he warned us that "democracy" cannot endure as a permanent form of government because when the dependent class learn they can vote themselves other people's money out of the treasury, they will always vote for the candidate who promises them the greatest taxation of the cash-cows that will pay for the indolent dependent-class lifestyle, and the nation will soon fail on loose fiscal policy, as we are seeing now in Europe and the US both.

Actually, yes it was... you'll remember that a vast mass of the Roman citizenry was idle and leeched off the wealthy who paid them a stipend in exchange for their vote when those things took place.
They spending their times in taverns or at the circus or amphitheater without any incentive to do something creditable, like joining the legions, so eventually Rome relied on mercenaries who were either not as good, or just plain disloyal, and eventually got eaten up by the Germans.
