Senator David Norris has withdrawn from the Presidential race after informing campaign staff of his decision.
He held a press conference this afternoon at his North Great Georges Street home to confirm the move.
It comes after days of debate and controversy following the weekend revelations that he sought clemency from an Israeli court, on Seanad headed paper, for his former partner Ezra Yitzhak Nawi on his conviction for the statutory rape of a 15-year-old Palestinian boy in 1997.
It emerged today that Senator Norris had a relationship with Mr Yitzhak Nawi for almost 30 years and the couple were together until 2001 – four years after his partner’s conviction for having sex with a minor.

The Irish Times had an interesting opinion piece this morning:
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opi ... ml?via=rel
It points out some previous cases where politicians had attempted to intercede for someone in similar cases, and what consequences (if any) they suffered for doing this. Apparently, you can get away with attempting to intercede on behalf of a convicted child rapist, but only if you're not high enough up the political food chain.

"child rapist"? That's as bad as when The Sun called him a paedophile. It was statutory rape with a 15 year-old.

Sorry, I wasn't referring to Norris at all, but to some of the cases discussed in the Irish Times article:Animavore wrote:"child rapist"? That's as bad as when The Sun called him a paedophile. It was statutory rape with a 15 year-old.
...
In 2002, when it emerged that the then junior minister Bobby Molloy had intervened in a much more serious way on behalf of a child rapist, Patrick Naughton, the then taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, defended him on the basis that “that’s what politicians do. A Teachta Dála is a public representative and you make representations.” There is nothing to suggest that Ahern was wrong about this. In relation to child rape alone, we know of three specific cases of TDs making pleas on their behalf. In 2007, it emerged that Fianna Fáil TD Tony Killeen had twice written to the minister for justice seeking early release for a heinous double rapist, Joseph Nugent. Fine Gael’s Pat Breen went so far as to put down a parliamentary question about when Nugent would be released. The Cork Labour TD Kathleen Lynch wrote a letter to a judge in 2008 to tell him that a convicted rapist of two children came from “a good family”.
What happened when these interventions came to public attention? Molloy eventually resigned – but that was because his office had gone even further and tried to contact the judge directly. The other three subsequently gained political promotion: Killeen to the cabinet as minister for defence; Breen to the chairmanship of the Oireachtas committee on foreign affairs; and Lynch to a junior ministry with responsibility for disability and older people. It is absolutely clear that the existing standard in Ireland is that making representations on behalf of a child rapist does not debar you from public office.
So, is Norris’s offence worse than these others? Hardly. It relates to a crime that, while utterly inexcusable, is less violent and brutal than the others. And, on a human level, it is considerably less cynical. Killeen, Lynch and Breen made their interventions purely as part of the demented system of clientelism. They did it to get votes. Norris did it out of a misguided sense of loyalty to someone who had been the love of his life.

Re: Ireland's hope of first gay president kaput.
So, let's see if I have this straight: The guy is in an intimate physical sexual relationship with someone who raped a 15-year-old boy, during the time his intimate partner raped the child, and now he's trying to use his political position to gain clemency for his intimate sexual partner, who fucked a child while in an intimate relationship with him?
Boy, that one stinks to high heaven and it's a good thing he's withdrawing. After all, not only does he like to consort with child-rapists (intimately), he's actually DEFENDING the actions of a child rapist by asking that his punishment be reduced.
Boy, does that ever put a black mark on the gay community.
One has to wonder if he knew about the rape at the time and failed to do the right thing and turn his lover in to the police. One also has to wonder how many other children his lover fucked that didn't get reported, and how many of them he knew about and kept silent about. After all, pedophiles rarely offend only once.

Wrong, Seth. He didn't rape anyone. It was statutory rape. Big difference. And 15 isn't a child either. So you're wrong to say he was a paedophile.

No, I'm not. That was a discussion about history and biology. This is a discussion about politics and law.Animavore wrote:By the way, Seth. You're being a hypocrite http://rationalia.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... ow#p930720
If it's legal to have consensual sex with 15-year-old children, as it was a hundred years ago, and still is in some places, then it's not a problem and he can fuck them, or watch his partner fuck them to his heart's content. If it's a crime, it's a crime, and I have no sympathy for politicians who go down because they commit, facilitate or overlook crimes or are apologists for criminals.
If he wants to stand up in the legislature and argue that the statutory rape and sodomy laws pertaining to 15 year old children in Israel are unjust, that's his right. But so long as it's the law, I expect that of anyone on the planet, politicians will strictly abide by the laws that they pass as a part of their duty to the public as elected officials.
Everyone else is expected to obey the law, even if they have a keen interest in fucking 15 year olds, and even if the 15 year old is keen to fuck them, and I see no reason why politicians should get a pass on obedience to the law and conformance to public expectations for their elected representatives.

Statutory rape is rape, whether you agree with the law or not. So long as it's the law, one is expected to obey it, and one is justly punished for violating it.Animavore wrote:Wrong, Seth. If you want the law changed, then change it, but don't try to excuse disobedience. If you choose disobedience, then accept the consequences.

Except, Seth, in that other thread there was a clear case of statutory rape and your reaction (as was mine) was 'Meh'. But in this case you're screaming, "child rapist", "paedophile" etc... Why is that?
